West of England 2017

Recommended Posts

On a more positive note, on Tuesday 14 March Swindon St George will be at Swindon College, promoting Rugby League and recruiting for their junior team, which they are developing closely with Swindon College.

With more sponsors and good open age recruitment, plus the potential of a junior team coming through, hopefully my home town's Rugby League team will grow and grow.

The West of England Lionhearts travel to Ireland this weekend to play Ireland U20's in the Regional team's first ever tour. Best of luck to all the West Country boys...

...and, on a personal note, especially to the Swindon St George representatives, Head Coach Ben Whincup and  players Ben Brinkworth, Jamie Deal and club captain George Cowley. ?

Yeah Gloucestershire All Golds A, London Chargers, West Wales Raiders, Valley Cougars, Aberdeen Warriors, Devon Sharks and Cornish Rebels don't really have a suitable league to play in.

Could they form their own competition, even if they only play every other week?

I know that Swindon St George voted for Devon to be allowed to join. I also believe that two SSG teams are trying to arrange a trip to the South West to play Devon and Cornwall in a bye weekend.

I hope I'm wrong but I'm not sure two separate Bath clubs will have enough players to compete (no evidence,  just a feeling). I'd have preferred Devon to be admitted and one Bath club.

From the looks of it, it's actually Chippenham and Corsham, not Bath at all.

Who do you need to speak to?  I know a few Reading lads who'd put themselves forward for this. Is it still Glenn Tyreman?

Ben Whincup, Head Coach at Swindon St George, coached today however I'm not sure who runs/organises it.

Current West of England Staffing is

Will Brewer (Oxford Cavs) Manager

Chris Chatten (Bath RL) Manager

Glenn Tyreman (Southampton Spitfires) Director of Coaching

Ben Winchup (Swindon St George) Head Coach

Dan Hinton (Somerset Vikings) Ass Coach

Matt Robinson (Swindon St George) Ass Coach

I believe Glenn deals with selection process and trials while Ben, Dan and Matt coach.

If anyone is in the Swindon area on Sunday, and you want to watch a bit of Rugby League, come along to Supermarine Sports & Social Club (SN3 4BZ) and watch Swindon St George vs Cardiff Blue Dragons. KO at 1.30pm

SWINDON ST GEORGE 22-21CARDIFF BLUE DRAGONS

One of the closest games I'll probably watch all season. SSG kicked a penalty in the closing minutes after Cardiff had scored a drop goal not long before. There were also 2 sin bins for SSG and a red card for Cardiff RL. It was a tad physical! ?

A great way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon! ?

So Devon Sharks have no league to play in then?

No league but a pretty full fixture list. Hopefully they'll be West of England fixtures in 2018!

Devon making a real effort there with those away trips. Are Dorset and Teignbridge clubs also just playing friendlies?

I dug up an article from a year ago about Swanage & Wareham RFC playing Weymouth & Portland RFC in League.  There was the hope that the former South Dorset Giants would reform.  More Easterly clubs now too.

Seems a very late start to the league season?
