Carnegies Kowloon Tigers enter the ICG Super League

HKRL are delighted to announce that the Carnegies Kowloon Tigers will be joining the inaugural HKRL ICG Super League which begins on May 27th.

Sponsored by Carnegies Bar in Wanchai and based in the Kowloon region of Hong Kong, the Tigers have recruited very strongly for the first ever 13-a-side Rugby League competition in Hong Kong. They will be captained by last year’s Side of Origin winning captain and HK Residents star Lee Griffiths, who has experience playing A-Grade football for the Berowra Wallabies in Sydney. He will be ably backed up fellow Origin teammates Josh Meninga and Sam Purvis in the backs and lock Ryan Campbell who excelled for the HK Residents side against Thailand.

“We’re delighted to take part in Hong Kong’s first Super league and very happy to have Carnegies support Kowloon’s first ever 13-a-side rugby league team. We’ve recruited well in the build up and hopefully we’ll be able to translate that onto the pitch come match day,” captain Griffiths said. “It’s a very exciting time to be part of HK rugby league with the Emerging Nations World Cup around the corner and everyone here at Kowloon cannot wait to get started.”

The Carnegies Kowloon Tigers will join the Wanchai Warriors in the four team comp which kicks off May 27th, with the final two teams to be announced in the coming days.

Am in Hong Kong at the moment. Amazing place. Would love to see RL continue to grow out here.

Spent some time in Singapore recently also, and saw a RL training session in progress while in a cab to my hotel. Another amazing city where it would be great to see RL grow. Huge amounts of money in both places.

ICG Super League Round 2 Wrap Up

The Carnieges Kowloon Tigers continued their winning streak against the Valley Broncos with a big 76-0 win, whilst the HKS Reivers and Wanchai Warriors fought to a high scoring 30-30 draw in the monsoon rain in Round 2 of the ICG Super League.

The Carnieges Kowloon Tigers secured their spot in the Grand Final with another resounding victory, with the superb Matty Keay leading the way with 4 tries and some very strong running, beating defenders with ease. Much like their first game, the Tigers superior quality and strength took them through the game with relative ease, however it was not without the Broncos being competitive in patches where they managed to complete their sets and work their way into the opposition 20m, only for a knock on to deny them their best scoring opportunity. Other try scorers were Frank Cartwright and Josh Hrstich who both grabbed hat-tricks, Ben Madgewick grabbed a brace, and Ryan Campbell and Lee Griffiths grabbed one each.

The other game of the round saw the most competitive match up of the tournament so far, with the HKS Reivers and Wanchai Warriors battling it out to a draw. The game, despite being played in torrential downpour, was an incredibly tight contest where the lead changed hands several times during the game.

The Warriors started off the stronger of the two, scoring two tries through Tom Powell and Itchy Nakashim. Hooker Powell in particular was particularly instrumental with ball in hand and directed his team very well throughout the game and finished the game with a hat-trick of tries. However, just as Reivers looked to be facing a tough evening in the rain, they fought their way back into the game and into the ascendancy, with stand-off Lewis Jones ably leading the way with two tries. Captain Jacob Weeks and Flynn Kennedy also scored as Reivers took the lead going into half time.

It was the Warriors who came out the second half fighting and started to really impose themselves up front as the rain was beginning to flood the pitch. Warriors second row Jack Muir made some very impressive carries in the rain gaining plenty of metres whilst stand-off Jason Fairleigh’s offload in the tackle was really starting to trouble the Reivers defense. By the end of the third quarter, the Warriors had retaken the lead through tries from Fairleigh, Dan Henry and another two from Powell. Going into the last quarter two scores down, the Reivers found something extra left in them and against a tiring Warriors defense, Archie Kay scored from a great outside break and Ryan Moralee scored to bring the game to 30-30.

Both the Reivers and Warriors are still in contention for a spot in the Grand Final going into the last round of regular matches in the ICG Super League where the Reivers play the Tigers and the Warriors are up against the Broncos. The Warriors need to win against the Broncos and hope the Reivers lose against the Tigers, at which point the table will be decided on points difference, whereas a Reivers win or draw will ensure their safe passage to the Grand Final.

However, the ICG Super League will be temporarily on hold as all eyes turn to the HKRL Battle of Origin this coming Saturday 24^th June. The game will be a representative game that will see the best players from the ICG Super League battle it out in a one-off game against one another, with one side representing the Northern Hemisphere taking on another side representing the Southern Hemisphere. Kick off will be at King’s Park, 7.30pm.

Thanks. Great footage of the splashathon and it was interesting to see the the variety of people involved from the interviews. 

 I still can't believe Societe Generale are one of the team sponsors. Having connections like that make me think this venture might have legs.

South victorious against North 30-14 in Battle of Origin

The Southern Hemisphere side pulled away in the second half to defeat a spirited Northern Hemisphere side 30-14 in HKRL’s Battle of Origin. The much anticipated one-off match didn’t disappoint with both sides contributing to a physical contest right from the offset.

The game made a blistering start with the Souths managing to get themselves into 10-0 lead early on in the game with scores through Tui Taniela and Josh Tuisoso. Stand-off Taniela and hooker Nathan Black were particularly impressive as they dictated terms for the South going forward, bringing their big runners into play to great effect. However, a unclaimed ball straight from a restart meant the North reclaimed possession deep into South’s half, and from the resulting set the North managed to get a score back through second rower and HKS Reivers’ Conor Cairns charging over from short range.

In response, the South showed their clinical attacking edge with a breakaway score through Taniela’s second. However, the North’s response was equally strong as they started to dominate possession and territory for the remainder of the half. Lock forward and Kowloon Tiger regular Frank Cartwright was a formidable presence in both attack and defense, winning plenty of big collisions throughout the game for the North. Valley Broncos Ringo Lung grew into the game at hooker during the North’s purple patch, whilst his Broncos teammate and centre Owen Pescod sliced through the South defense with a number of strong line breaks, though the South’s Frankie Solomona and Tim Smith did put in a number of shuddering shots at their opposition. The North finished the half strongly as Cairns once again showed his prowess near the try line charging over from 5m for his second, making the half time score 16-10 to the South.

With the game evenly poised at half-time, the South produced a superb 20 minute spell in the third quarter that effectively ended the contest. Lifting their intensity up another notch, their physicality and broken field running eventually wore down a tiring North’s defence to score three tries through Broncos second row Dylan Navra and two from Harry Leato. Despite spending plenty of time in opposition territory and a number of repeated infringements by the South in the remainder of the game, the North failed to engineer a comeback, though a loud cheer did go up for Cairns who again managed to drive over from close range once more to score his third try of the game, bringing the final score to 30-14.

Wan Chai Warriors beat Valley Broncos 36-24 in Round 3 of the ICG Super League.

 

The Wan Chai Warriors are still in the running for a place in the rugby league ICG Super League grand final thanks to a 36-24 victory over the Valley Broncos on Saturday at King's Park in Kowloon. 

Strong performances by Tui Tanielu and Hogan Toomalatai mean they stay third in the table. But the odds are still against them getting the second spot needed for a place in the final on July 15. 

The Warriors got off to a poor start. Valley took the lead, and dominated the early stages, before the Warriors rallied to end the first half with a 24-14 lead. 

In the second, Valley again piled on the pressure, scoring first in the now muddy conditions. But as the game progressed, the Broncos started to tire, and the Warriors’ Frankie Solomona and Tui Tanielu then took control to give their team victory by a comfortable 12 point margin. 

Valley finish the season having lost all three of their Super League games.
