SO Avignon

Provided decent resistance to the new Cup holders Carcassonne Sunday at Domec. Holding out till late in the first half. But ASC building on their fine Cup exploit still had too much for the visitors going down 34-12. Coach Renaud Guigue admitted afterwards they are still short of a few quality players to tangle with the top four presently.

The former Dragons full back and assistant coach of the Tricolores wants some action. He’s asked the club bosses to secure a full back, half back and prop forward for next season – preferably from Down Under. Veteran Cagnac is retiring and young hopeful Goudemand now expected to leave.

Interestingly he’s demanding that the club move out of their present ground Stade Saint-Ruf and return to the Parc des Sports where the Grand Avignon club played a decade earlier. He’s not a fan of the synthetic pitch which he says has caused too many injuries this year.

The local newspaper report just said that he would be leaving. He's tried Toulon so hopefully staying in the game - Toulouse or Dragons would be good.

Is that the ground that the international games were played at?

Hopefully not Catalans. He's a loose forward and we're stacked (Bird, Baitieri, Garcia).

Toulouse would be a viable option but I think he's going to end up at another Elite 1 club.

TO could be an option what with Bentley getting on a bit but the priority has to be another stand-off ,fullback  preferably with someone who can  kick to reinforce. Maurel isn't a good enough kicker at this level neither is Kriouache .Kheirallah played s/o last game with Maurel going to f/b, no idea what the line-up will be tomorrow.

It's official, they are making the move. If they are aiming for League One then it might be a good idea in the long run. Makes the front of the La Provence newspaper too.

The Google translation:

Quote

A page in the history of SO AVIGNON XIII will soon turn.

Thus, SOA XIII and its managers recently presented to Madame Cécile HELLE, Mayor of Avignon their wishes to transfer all the sporting, social and administrative activities of the club to the Parc des Sports d'Avignon.

For almost 100 years the SO AVIGNON made vibrate the stands of the Pierre Baizet stadium.

We will remember that the match of 15 April last against XIII Limouxin will mark his last meeting of SOA XIII on the lawn of St Ruf.

In a development process initiated a few seasons ago, we felt for several months that the sustainability and the progression would inevitably take the direction of the Parc des Sports.

The Parc des Sports and its installations will contribute to bring the SO AVIGNON XIII into a new era and thus allow everyone to claim higher ambitions.

The major stadium of the city of Avignon will allow our entity to have facilities in accordance with our will to contribute to the training of players but also to allow the reception of our current and future partners in dedicated spaces of qualities.

The City of Avignon and its representatives have recently validated our project to relocate the club.

We will quickly finalize the schedule of operations to allow SO AVIGNON XIII to quickly take its marks in its new enclosure.

All the categories of SO AVIGNON XIII are concerned and involved in this transfer of stadium.

We will soon announce the final date of entry to the Parc des Sports.

So Avignon have a bigger stadium than Catalans and most SL clubs with 17k seats.

Are you able to translate the actual article and not the press release?

It's a brilliant stadium too, great atmosphere and perfect for SL.

The article itself is behind a paywall I think. There's no mention of playing in England.

It mostly talks about the pro's and con's of moving the club to the stadium - the fact that the stadium is under-used, everyone is very positive but the mayor wants certain details taken care of (if the RL club has private rooms, use of the gym etc. other things must be shared), the stadium needs to get used for events, Elite 1 doesn't start until January 2018 and the club has until then to improve the first team, but the juniors etc. will start in September as normal.

Obviously it means SOA now have access to one of the best stadia in European RL - the next step is to put out a team and fixtures worthy of that.

Any decent fit forward would be good for Cats now..

Those 3 all very good players but all out or carrying knocks

He wouldn't get a minute of game time. Keep in mind this is a team where Bousquet is on the bench.

If a French pro league was started, what would be the position of Les Catalan and Toulouse?

Not this again!

A pro French league is so far off the agenda it's not worth thinking about. Get Avignon and Cathares playing in League 1, providing an outlet for the players with potential, and leave the French domestic comp to develop youngsters and provide social RL. Like the situation in New Zealand.

Dragons budget reported here as €11M. Elite 1 may be what €2M in total across the ten clubs? Toulouse Olympique could if they secure a top 4 Championship place this year see a budget rising to €3M in 2018.Those two clubs are exceptional for lots of raisons. I think if any follow they would look to being regional entities.
