Dons News Posted July 9, 2017 Share Posted July 9, 2017 South Wales Ironmen 12 Doncaster RLFC 70 The Wern, Merthyr Tydfil Kingstone Press League One The Dons registered their biggest ever away league victory with a 70-12 annihilation of South Wales Ironmen at The Wern. Head coach Richard Horne made four changes to the side that beat Oxford RL 34-16 at the LD Nutrition Stadium last time out. The Dons made a similar start as they did against Oxford, by scoring a try in the opening two minutes of the game, a powerful break from Russ Spiers on the final tackle saw the prop touch the ball down on the final tackle. Three minutes later Horne’s men were in again, a jinxing run from Spiers saw him eventually off-load the ball to Jason Tali to crash over the line under pressure from the Ironmen defence, before Jack Miller added the extras. 0-12. Just after the 10th minute mark the Dons were in again, a piece of individual brilliance from Jamie Thackray saw him sidestep a flat-footed Ironmen defence before touching the ball down under the posts. However on the 14th minute the hosts had a try of their own, youngster Morgan Punchard on dual-registration from Championship Halifax found Fax team-mate Luke Nelmes, who crashed over the line. It took the Dons three minutes to respond, as Spiers carved the Ironmen’s defence open once again before taking the ball over the line himself, while fending off five players in the process. Just before the half hour mark the Dons were in again, an offload from Reece Dean found Feka Paleaaesina who powered his way over the try-line to extend the lead even further. 6-30 The Dons took complete control of the half with Dean and Doherty both getting on the scoreheet respectivley, before the half-time hooter. HALF-TIME | South Wales Ironmen 6-40 Doncaster RLFC Horne wanted his players to take their first half performance into the final 40 minutes of the game and that’s exactly what they did. It may have taken a bit longer than the side would have wanted but it came in style, some good running from Ryan Wright gave Jack Downs an easy path to the line. The Dons were in again moments later, a direct run through the heart of the Ironmen defence from Dean caused havoc for the hosts, his offload to Sheriff gave brought up the 50 points for the Dons after 55 minutes. Miller added the extra two. 6-52. The Ironmen were not going to take the game lying down and managed to get on the scoresheet again on the 65th minute, a high kick was initially well caught by Dean but a 1-on-1 strip by Conner Farrer by the Dons try line gave them an easy score. Two minutes later though the Dons pulled the lost points back, some sloppy defending by the Ironmen saw dual-reg player Downs to get his second of the game. With the clock ticking down the Dons went into overload and scored three tries in the space of seven minutes. A chipped pass across the pitch by Dean was expertly caught by winger Doherty to add his second of the game and to complete his fifth try in the space of two games. Dean who was the centre of everything was there to provide Sheriff once again, the winger ran through unopposed to grab a brace for himself. The final try of the game went to Miller, the kicker sprinted through a lacklustre Ironmen defence to complete the score and hand the Dons their biggest away league victory of all time.
