Handling's been a bit sloppy and the Ravens are running into a strong wind in the second half. They play like RU players. They just started an attacking set about 10m from the NZ line and I think there were only 8 passes in the entire set.

49min: Laurieta Maumau barges over for the Ferns. Too big for the defenders.

Ferns 22-4

52min: NZ bench forward Krystal Murray under the posts.

Ferns 28-4

It's a good thing the Ferns have the points on the board because they're only completing at 40%

55min: Ferns again! Teuila Fotu-Moala crosses. Ravens' defence needs structural work - they lose their shape very easily and overlaps appear on both sides of the field within 2-3 tackles.

Conversion missed. Ferns 32-4

60mins: Apii Nicholls-Pualau the Ferns FB crosses out wide. Kimiora Nati converts. Ferns 38-4

This was a perfect example of what I said above. By tackle 5, the Canucks only had 3 defenders on the eastern side of the goal posts.

65: Fotu-Moala under the posts. Simple change of angle and Ravens didn't move. I think the fatigue has set in. NZers have run twice as many metres.

44-4

Defending champions and host nation Australia will play their first of three pool matches against the Cook Islands following the opener at Southern Cross Group Stadium.

The Jillaroos will field a young side with four debutants named alongside starting prop and captain Stephanie Hancock who will be chasing World Cup glory for the final time in her career.

Coach Brad Donald has chosen to rest seven of the team’s best 17 for the opener including Ruan Sims, Sam Bremner, Renae Kunst and Elianna Walton, all of which were members of the 2013 World Cup winning squad.

The Canadians need to focus on some RL theory. Their kicking game was very RU - just hoof it into the air and hope. They didn't kick for the chasers or for the line. Too much one-out running (setting up for the next ruck/maul?) and, as I mentioned, defensive formation needs some work.

They couldn't find a vocalist for the Kukis anthem?

No vocalist for OZ anthem either. The crowd sang along then (crickets.........) when they got to the second verse. (It's a standing joke in OZ that no-one knows the second verse of the national anthem)

Now a Kukis haka. Few girls with hijabs in the crowd.

6min: Caitlyn Moran try for Jillaroos. Misses the kick. 4-0

Kukis couldn't get her on the ground and couldn't get under the ball

11min: Brittany Breayley try for Jillaroos from a short dummy-half run. Kukis defence spread too fast and didn't cover the line behind the PTB. Moran misses another conversion.

Ali Brigginshaw runs 40m from an OZ scrum win to score under the posts. Too easy. Moran converts.

20-0 after 22 mins.

The Ravens have some world class union players. Looks like they still  have a lot to learn though.

They need to watch a lot of RL vids to get a better understanding of formations in attack and defence.
