Not you - 15-26yr olds predominately and they are very different to you and those individuals commentating in the press.

I don't remember us meeting ...

However, my question still stands.

The Army (all the forces actually) are suffering from a massive shortfall in recruitment numbers.  This suggests that 'Be the Best' might not be working anymore.  Whats wrong with trying something different?

A gay former soldier was interviewed on Sky on the day this ad was first aired.  He didn't think it was appropriate.

Yet close colleagues of mine, serving and gay, have no dramas with it eventhough it’s not be aimed at them.

It’s aimed at the country’s youth as already stated.

It's aimed at those young people with no experience of serving in the forces.

Since you are picking holes I thought I would pick one back.

You’ve lost me here... that’s what I said - the nation’s youth.

The old toughness of the Army from WW2and Korea ended with the warrants (who kept it alive) in the early 1980's.

Some of the changes in the new army are good, some not so good...we have to adapt to changing times.

Now the Navy.....

Well done them!

They (like I did) either pretended to be something I wasn't or were determined enough to ignore the perception that they were not welcome.

Lowest common dominator of an effective military is who can kill more than the other (yes we all like to think it isn't, but it is) so why does sexuality or gender matter in that?

It doesn't, but for years the perception has built up that it does.  These adverts aim to change that maybe more people like me (or the guy Sky found) will realise they are welcome to join and have a career in the military.

As a gay former sailor I think it is very appropriate!

I really didn't care if that the person beside me was straight, I just trusted them to have my back!

What about the Navy?

I am awaiting this with a degree of anticipation.

There are many Royal Naval traditions, I am just waiting with baited breath what our Canadian friend has to say about the Royal Navy ( which he has never heard  of).

From his previous comments I guess it is nothing to do with Churchill. More the RCN, or the RAN as opposed the Royal Navy!

I have little, if any, knowledge of the Royal Navy.  It seems the Navy (any of them) always have a nice song at mess dinners though. I will bow to you knowledge in these naval matters...now the Air Force, well, thats another story....
