28-29 Jan: Ladbrokes Challenge Cup Round 1 - Match Thread

Recommended Posts

I know there is another Challenge cup thread currently on the go but i thought I would take a different angle

With the first competitive games of 2018 just days away and the end of silly season I was wondering;

Will there be any Hammerings or upsets and who are the teams to look out for?

I don't really have much knowledge of the amateur game so feel free to educate me.

I'll will be going to watch the Army vs Milford Marlins

I'll be at Chargers v Hills Hoists (New River Stadium) hoping for a repeat of the close encounter in last year's London & SE Grand Final

Think I might go to the Loughborough game. Would like to see Longhorns do well but it'll be a challenge for them. Which tie is being televised? (assume it's on the BBC website like last year)

The RAF game is at RAF Cranwell

It is not inside a secure area so no need to sign in, as can be the case with the Navy although with United Services RU home this may be on the 4g across the road

If the usual arrangements apply at Cranwell it is not on the stadium pitch by the car park but about 200 yards away. There is no formal cover but a large elevated building containing changing rooms etc

Anyone going to Loughborough Uni should note this is a midday start. There are two pitches about  mile apart with different parking for each. I assume it is on the main pitch and this would explain the early KO as again RU is taking place. Just go the main entrance, there is a manned barrier and they will advise where the game is and where to park

Can anyone confirm Hull Uni is on campus and not on a hired pitch

I am deciding between the three but always enjoy Saddleworth and if wet will head there

Looks like rain is forecast for the BBC match, but nothing too heavy.

I went to see the RAF at Uxbridge, when I lived there, and had to be escorted to the ground. But was soon ignored after that and had to make my own way out.

I shall be at New River watching the all London game and then the Capital Clash afterwards. Great start to the 2018 season and at least there will be one London club in the next round!

Yes good luck to Wallsend. I fear they'll have their work cut out to keep Pilkington in check but hopefully it will be a great day with the Thunder game to follow.

When was the last time an amateur club from the north east played in the first round? I don't count Newcastle or Northumbria University. I know Teesside Steelers played at the back end of the naughties.

As I noted on the other thread, RN RL say all are welcome at Burnaby Road, Portsmouth.  Kick off 2pm, bar open from 1.30pm, free entry for civilians and services.

Distington versus Queens for me. Difficult to call - no form to go on. That said, Distington seem to have been consistently strong (in their league) in recent seasons. As a neutral, hoping for a tight game. Not overly bothered who progresses.
