Broncos go back to back with Dewsbury win

Recommended Posts

THE BRONCOS maintained their perfect start to the season with their second win in as many games on a difficult afternoon where playing conditions were far from ideal.
In the end a try apiece from Eddie Battye and Jarrod Sammut was enough for the victory, but it was the defensive efforts of the Broncos which caught the eye keeping the Dewsbury Rams scoreless.
Both sides struggled to gain any real momentum and despite the victory Broncos captain Jay Pitts was quick to point out that his side must show considerable improvement in attack despite the conditions.

He said “It was awful conditions and we didn’t play them very well either, we didn’t respect the ball and were really poor in that aspect but fair play we defended it and to keep them to naught with the amount of ball they had is a big credit. It’s not good enough though from us we need a lot of improvement especially offensively.”

The Broncos had to dig deep and work hard, especially in the second half when they were constantly repelling the Rams best attacking efforts and on numerous occasions it was a last ditch tackle or scrambling defence which prevented any points being conceded. On six occasions the Rams were held up over the line, full back Alex Walker a stand out performer. Pitts praised the hard work of Walker and his team mates saying “Credit to Alex he’s been working a lot on his goal line defence so to be able to stop them that many times is massive for him. We kept turning up for each other and although it wasn’t perfect at times and it was mostly our own doing, to keep any team to nil is a big plus.”
The Broncos were well led in a battle of the forwards by Mark Ioane with some strong carries up field. Eddie Battye came off the bench and made an immediate impact with the only try of the first half. Hooker James Cunningham put in a grubber kick close to the line and a lucky ricochet bounced kindly for Battye who scored arguably the easiest try of his career, picking up the loose ball a yard from the line and putting it over the whitewash. Jarrod Sammut converted with ease from in front and it remained 6-0 until the break.

The second half brought much of the same, the forwards constantly driving the ball in, but handling errors preventing any real attacks in the sleet and swirling winds. Signed from Widnes on loan, Jordan Johnstone was another stand out performer with some darting runs from dummy half and solid defence as the home side had most of the possession.
As the Rams looked for a match levelling score with twelve minutes remaining Jared Simpson was rushed into a kick down field on the last tackle, Sammut charging the ball down on half way, hacking on and swan diving over to seal the win. Sammut still had time to add a penalty goal after the hooter to round off a 12-0 victory for the Broncos.

Looking to next week’s top of the table clash at home against the also unbeaten Featherstone Rovers, Pitts was looking forward to better conditions and home comforts. “It’s a totally different game and we’re back at home on a fast track, it’s two good skilful teams and we’re definitely looking forward to it, the Dewsbury game has gone now. We need to work hard on respecting the ball more and hopefully we will come away with the win next week.”
