How amazing, a cross comes in and Mandzukic ends up on the floor, in spite of holding on to defenders.

Cheating bas tard.

One of the reasons I get so annoyed by the writing off of England's performances is that they have taken steps to write much of what is wrong with English football. I've commented on here that I know one person in high level football and he's been raving about what Southgate was doing since he was in the U21s.

We came up short because we didn't have good enough players but at least we looked like a team and they knew how they wanted to play. It was a world away from Iceland 2016.

I've thought for a long time that the UK in general doesn't produce a certain type of creative athlete in any sport. Whilst still true, I've changed over the years about how important this is. Andy Murray, England RU and our Olympic team have demonstrated that you can achieve the ultimate success without the best technical ability. You just have to play to your strengths and develop a way to win against the best. Tiki-taka is the most technical and attractive form of football but it isn't the most effective anymore.

England can win a major tournament or at least do better than 1990 and now if they continue to improve from here. After all, we could've won this one; if they'd played the tournament 10 times from the semi-finals we probably would have won one.

I doubt very much we'll ever be the best technical side in the world but we could become one of the most effective teams. We do regularly beat teams more with more true technical ability than us, it is only wins against big teams when it matter that elude us.

But why not aim for technical excellence? Or are we saying that it's culturally beyond English/British players?

I agree with all you say about Southgate, but having proved that thoughtful reform can bring results why not aim higher?

When all is said and done, England have done tremendously well at this tournament and everyone involved deserves credit.

I remember noting the success of the youth teams, and I know that this wave tends to continue into senior years.  It has made previous English success foreseeable.  The truth is that I did not dare to believe it.

While you made this point, I was making the point we were well overdue a decent run even if due to luck. I think we were both right!

I liked the parallel of this tournament with 1990 and the disastrous 1988/2016 euro campaigns.

With what transpired in 1992 and 1994, I'm hoping that's where the parallel ends!

Graham Taylor was by all accounts a great man.

But, he was a truely terrible England manager.  My Mum would generally ignore men saying they knew better than the England manager and these opinions changing within ten minutes of the game starting.  She mentioned though, that with Taylor, it was different.

I recall in London, watching TV and the England line-up was shown.  We turned the TV off.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!
