League Restructure Discussion (Merged Threads)

Recommended Posts

Confirmed new structure to change next year s8s to continue this year.

I look forward to whatever 'bold and innovative' rehash of whatever hasn't worked before we get from 2019 onwards.

Where is that confirmed?

Robert Elstone talked about it during his press conference today.

Simple 1 up 1 down. Championship playoff final will be the MPG

Indications are 11 out of 12 clubs are behind the proposals

For now...

Bets on the first club to lose the MPG to bust? First year last time. Surely we can't repeat the trick.

First relegated club to go bust?

Big achievement if we can get a two-fer

I wasn't a fan of the 8's but how about keeping something for more than 5 minutes?

Would be interesting to see how many games they go for per season, and how many teams in the playoffs.

Of all the changes, this was the one I welcomed most, back to basics.

No doubt we will try and complicate it somehow, in the name of innovation.

I've edited the thread title as I think this is going to be a popular subject, and I don't want half a dozen other league restructure threads popping up at the same time!! ;)

Wait I thought this was supposed to be impossible due to the Sky deal.

Glad to be shut of the 8's

This is a good move IMO, I think its right that we tried the 8s, as a sport we have never been afraid to try new things but I don't think its worked so I think going back to a normal structure is the right thing. I know quite a few casual viewers who are totally put off by the split and even though it is fairly simple it seems complicated to casual fans.

1 up 1 down and a top 5 play off would be the best format IMO

Great news for those people who actually like to know the season's fixtures during, well, the season. That was the biggest flaw/farce of the lot.

Will be interesting to see whether promotion will be decided as first past the post or via play offs and Grand Final as previously the case (which IMO doesn't necessarily promote the side most likely to be competitive through a full SL season).

Personally hoping for a straight home and away 22 fixture league season with a third cup competition to supplement the loss of any home games as in the early days of the Buddies/Arriva/Northern Rail Cup.

Another good outcome is the fact that the Championship will actually become a proper competition again.

shame... i like the 8s and think it may have increased investment to the championship in the long term but hey ho its RL so nothing ever stays the same..

good to see them committing to the funding outside the super league though right at the end of the piece on totalrl
