Graham 1,356 Report post Posted August 9, 2018 Broncos are bracing for one more magic act from the retiring Johnathan Thurston, who will try to derail Brisbane’s finals hopes in his 31st and final Queensland derby tonight. Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has not forgotten the devastation of the 2015 NRL grand final, when Thurston snapped the extra-time field goal which broke Brisbane’s hearts and snatched the Cowboys’ maiden premiership. Three years after that epic encounter, the Cowboys have crashed to equal last, but Thurston is vowing to go down swinging in the final month of his glittering NRL career. The Cowboys are deep in a desperate battle to avoid the dreaded spoon after fashioning just five wins from 20 matches in 2018 and co-captain Matt Scott said they needed to finish the year strongly. Graham 1,356 Report post Posted August 9, 2018 Sam Thaiday will play his 300th NRL match, after making his debut in Round 18, 2003 against the Bulldogs. He becomes the 33rd player overall to reach the 300 game milestone and the 15th player to do so for one club, with Darren Lockyer and Corey Parker having previously played 300 games for Brisbane. Johnathan Thurston also plays his last game against the Broncos and gets one last chance to break their hearts.
Graham 1,356 Report post Posted August 9, 2018 Just two points separate first and second, and just four points separate third and eighth on the ladder. There are two massive top eight clashes this weekend as well as a Queensland Derby which kicks Round 22 off on Thursday night.

Farmduck 2,517 Report post Posted August 9, 2018 But you haven't explained why a black person like "young" Gehamat Shibasaki has a Japanese name. Surely that's the burning question as he makes his NRL debut.

Graham 1,356 Report post Posted August 9, 2018 (edited) 5 minutes ago, Farmduck said: Erm, no, it's darter. In Latin, if it was pronounced dayter, it would be spelt deta, not data. Maybe, but tradition here is to say it the other way. “The most common pronunciation is ˈdeɪtə, (day-tuh). This is acceptable in the UK, the US, and Ireland. Then we have ˈdætə, or da-tuh (the a makes the sound as in cat). Acceptable in the US and Ireland. And finally ˈdɑːtə, dah-tuh. Australia, New Zealand, and UK formal.” I choose to pronounce it the first way. It sounds the better to my ears. So my ears are different to yours FD I suspect. Plus according to the above there’s two hard sounding ones to choose between. Edited August 9, 2018 by Graham
