Neil Robinson

London Rugby League fans who followed the Crusaders and subsequently Broncos in the mid-1990s will be sad to hear of the death of Neil Robinson. Neil was from Cumbria, and originally supported Workington. He was working in London as a Sergeant in the Metropolitan Police. He started at the club as a volunteer, and became chairman of the Match Day Committee, and helped edit the match programme. In the middle of the 1993–94 season, the RFL took over running the club, pending new owners taking over, after the club had been abandoned by its owners. Neil became the club secretary, and kept the club functioning, along with coach Tony Gordon, commercial manager Nigel Waters and many volunteers, until the Brisbane Broncos took over the club.
In March 1994, London faced Workington Town in a crucial promotion match. Neil wore his Workington tie with his London Crusaders blazer, and was happy with a 20–20 draw. A match programme said his jobs included “honorary secretary, match day committee chairman, video operator and general dogsbody.” He continued to support and help the club when the Broncos took over. He later became a match day commissioner for the RFL, still serving the sport he loved.
