Sydney football Stadium

Recommended Posts

I didn't know it was being knocked down after today.

Only 30 years old that ground.

Scene of Grand finals and a famous GB victory in 1988.

Parramatta Stadium demolished too, and Stadium Australia to follow.

I thought it was built for the Sydney Olympics in 2000

That is Stadium Australia known as ANZ Stadium (formerly Telstra Stadium)

The stadium situation in Oz is a bit weird. Do they just enjoy wasting money on facilities?

I was surprised how average the facilities were at the ground 10 years ago.

44K in there and a great atmosphere for its last match.

Record crowd for RL there.

Yes. There seems to be pubic money to burn for footy stadiums.

I think SFS was built at just the wrong time with very little in terms of hospitality and catering, etc.

Re Stadium Australia. I think Olympic venues are notoriously difficult to convert into anything useful afterwards.

Erm, they are going to knock it down. And then build it up again.

I suppose it keeps folk in employment.

With more hospitality, catering, lounges, sponsors areas. Which is what RL stadiums are all about.

The original architect's take on it all....

It seems mental after only 30 years.

As it stands.

Parra/'Western Sydney Stadium' - Not too far off being finished, looks like it will be one of the premier 'medium' sized venues in the world, definitely in Rugby League. New Capacity 30k.

SFS/Allianz - Last game today, few concerts to go before demolition. Not sure if there is a definite rebuild plan. The original concepts looked immense from memory with a 45k capacity with club mode to block out the top tiers with what looked like LED paneling with displays of the score, club logos etc. Not sure if the original plan will survive after a bit of backlash and revised plans after the original plans were announced by State Government. Improved entry/exit, facilities and roof cover, bottle necks when exiting in an emergency was one of the main tactics used to get it rebuilt before ANZ.

Stadium Australia/ANZ - New Capacity 70k (at last count, I think) Last to be done and has been revised from a complete knockdown to "Refurbishment". Will be turned rectangular with all but the top tier being closer to the field. A definite win but politics turned it from a major win (rebuild) in to a bit of a band-aid job and Allianz getting redone first because of SGC trust pushing the card that all of a sudden it was unsafe and urgently needed rebuilding first.

That nearly scratched the surface.

Sydney has a stadium-building-based economy. If we ever stopped building/demolishing them we'd go into recession.

I remember a letter complaining about the seats at SFS, he said the seats were too small and too bouncey to dance on. It was the week after Aus 12-GB 26.

It was an eye opener for us and all were impressed. Up there with WR I think.

Hopefully this major oversight will be corrected in the rebuilt stadium.

I've always wondered why it wasn't built the same height all the way around.  It would probably have held 60,000 or so if the top didn't dip the way it does.

The article says it's hosted the Edinburgh Tattoo... err, is that the Edinburgh in NSW, or well, 'Edinburgh'?

Where are the Roosters and Souths going to play next year? Saying that they all have 2 or 3 ‘home’ grounds anyway

Roosters will play next door at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Rabbitohs play their home matches at ANZ Stadium and have done for quite a few years.

When are they knocking the ANZ down?

After the SFS is finished I think. Don't think its being knocked down, but just refurbished.  Just looked and apparently the SFS is due to be completed by 2022.

You see, I find that silly.

You could see the Souths fans loving walking to the game today. It looked great.

Whereas normally they have to go half way across town to rattle around in a stadium that's far too large for them.
