Teams failing to name a full seventeen matchday squad (Merged Threads)

This is a club with SL aspirations not too long since. Couldn't they have signed four local amateurs to make up the numbers? Plenty of good amateur club sides around there.

Leigh the latest club to do so, naming just thirteen for their away game at Dewsbury today.

Terrible times for the game but what can be done to prevent this?

A recognition of the importance of Academy by the RFL alongside the insistence of a competing 2nd string side for all clubs.

It is a club that was in Super League as recently as last year.2017.

A heartlands club for over 120 years.

No doubt those who were wanting West Wales Raiders thrown out of the competition will be along in a few moments to repeat the call  - this time about Leigh Centurions.

It would appear that being an elite club in an elite league with elite owners isn't a panacea for the sport.

The NRL - and the television coverage thereof - don't seem to suffer the same problems.

Once the experts sort out 2 on-pitch referees they can address more pressing requirements.

Talk about a team, Leigh, that put all their eggs in one basket and blew the parachute payment and a heap of money to try and get promotion. Indeed they were a Super League's club last season. Now they only have 13 players. There is plenty of money in the Championship for every club to run sustainably but instead some squander it on quick fixes to try and get promotion. It shows just why there should be certain standards to be in Super League and the Championship.

It seems pretty clear from the fact that 16 times teams havent put out a full side and one of the top sides in the Championship hasnt named any substitutes along with the precipitous fall in playing numbers at the community level that the systems we had is working brilliantly and all we needed was to take 150 players and put them in a super league reserves competition.

Why would a leading amateur player want to sign for a shambolic outfit like Leigh?

If a pro or semi pro club cannot raise 17 players they should forfeit the game and face RFL disciplinary panel on charges with automatic relegation. Unless there are exceptional circumstances (illness sweeping through the club).

By that reckoning 16 sides would have been relegated this year then, not bad considering the season hasn't finished yet

Finally somene has said it.  I actually can't believe a so-called professional club could be so utterly 'amateurish' as to not do just that.  It is an insult to their fans as much as anything else.

The sport would be a complete laughing stock if any media outlets could actually be bothered to cover stuff like this.  They can't though, as the game has (justifiably) become completely irrelevant in the UK sporting landscape.  Stuff like this simply reinforces that.

Would they have played short,no,  they would have ensured they had a full 17. So 16 sides would not have relagated. These clubs are bringing the game into disrepute.

The deadline has passed for registering new signings, so no, they couldn't.

Well I'm sure that wouldn't have been the case if there were rules in place to severely disincentive them from doing so.

Can someone clarify if they are having trouble paying the players?  That could be the main issue.

Even if it is they have no one to blame but themselves. They have had at least twice as much funding as any other Championship team and blew it all running a full time team, obviously not budgeting and going for broke. They could have run sustainably with a part time team and made a huge profit this season if they had wanted but no.

Didn't their £500K 'parachute' payment have to all be spent on paying players?

Whether it did is irrelevant and I really can't see why it would be the case anyway. They still got their 750k funding on top and didn't have to spend all of that on players too.
