TONGA V KANGAROOS
Saturday, October 20, 5:45pm AEDT

Saturday will mark the first time Tonga play the Kangaroos, and they’re bidding to become the fifth team to ever taste success against Australia. Mal Meninga’s side is staring down the barrel of consecutive losses in the same calendar year for the first time since 1978 when they take on the Mate Ma’a at Mt Smart Stadium.

Boosted by the commitment of star forwards Andrew Fifita and Jason Taumalolo, Tonga have a real opportunity to produce the second boilover against the Kangaroos in as many weeks.

The Kangaroos were flattered by the scoreline against the Kiwis and are in a transitional period after the retirements of star quartet Billy Slater, Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk.

Australia will be better for the run against New Zealand, but their forwards will need to bounce back after being dominated by the Kiwi pack. If Tonga can take a leaf out of the Kiwis’ book and take it to Australia up front, then the pressure will be on the Kangaroos’ new-look spine to deliver.

This is being shown on subscription service WatchNRL in the U.K. and other countries outside Oz, NZ etc

Seems like a good-natured atmosphere, so I'm sure all three Australia fans at the stadium will be feeling like they've been made welcome.

That little boy singing the Tongan anthem will never forget this vocal accompaniment!

It went off for about 5 minutes but now it's back.

In a perverse way - maybe it's just my perverse way of thinking - the least important thing about this game is the game itself. There's a lot riding on this, in relation to Tonga's future as a RL drawcard in UK, NZ and AUS. There's a lot riding on Kangaroos selections for these players. The willingness of potential sponsors to pump some cash into the Pacific comes into it. The viability of Tonga beyond one flash-in-the-pan RLWC is up for scrutiny - don't forget Scotland's performance in WC2013 then underwhelming follow-up. The worst possible result is a 30-point win to the Kangaroos.

Good game. Great atmosphere.

Tonga need to find at least one talented half and they'll put a lot of fear into the opposition. Deserved Australian victory, too good in the first half.

Michael Jennings is unfortunately truly past it.

Australia were clinical in that first half punishing Tonga's many errors, thought Tedesco was outstanding, entertaining game but how much better would it have been if Tonga had been given a game to dust off the cobwebs before facing the Kangeroo's.
