World Club Challenge in 1994

Recommended Posts

Given that the 1997 version of the World Club Challenge was a bit of a disaster for a variety of reasons how do you think English clubs would have done 3 seasons earlier ? Both competitions had 16 teams in it and i have made what i believe to be the starting 17's for each club some of the clubs lower down the league in England may be wrong i only saw the clubs who played against Australia that year so i don't mind being corrected. I have used the 1994/95 season in England  rather than 1993/94 because i am slightly more familiar with those teams due to the Kangaroo tour. I have placed the team in a 1st vs 16th system, 2nd vs 15th etc i was curious if anyone thinks a lower English side of the time could have pulled an upset. Anyway here is how the teams would have lined up.

Some of those Aussie teams could have declared after 20 minutes!

I am sure that in the 1997 WCC Brisbane used to have a horse that would trot around the field whenever they scored a try.  When they played Halifax and scored around 70 points the horse had to be stretchered off the ground due to exhaustion.

What peed me off is that the RL put together a great concept and the organisation was excellent but it was pulled.  We all expected some floggings but over time we may have been able to close the gap.

The concept, if played every 2 years, could have brought a greater spotlight on our game and led to increased income in the UK game but the short sightedness soon put a stop to that.

I think it was more of a timing issue 1997-1999 i would argue was probably the weakest English Rugby League had been for a long time. All of the top players from the 90's and late 80's were past their prime or retired and the good players of the early 00's hadn't quite matured Sculthorpe, Morley etc. There were also 22 teams in Australia which meant there wasn't much overseas talent to bring in even ones who were discarded ended up at lower Australian sides rather than in England.

It's why i chose 1994 because i could see Sheffield Eagles vs Souths being competitive. Also Wigan are easily one of the top 3 sides in this scenario whereas in 1997 they had slipped quite a lot.

I think Wigan would have won and the next three English teams would have been competitive.  The rest would have been blowout Australian wins.

A guess would be 14 - 2 or 13 - 3 to Australia.

The only WCC match I saw in 1997 was Brisbane v St Helens. Painful to watch for a British fan, but that Broncos side was superb, bolstered by some extra star signings courtesy of the Packer/Murdoch conflict.

It was also the first time I'd seen a kid called Darren Lockyer in action, although he didn't play for long in this game.

You know there were 22 clubs in Australia in 1997? It was the lowest standard ever, aside from being full time. The ESL sides were lucky.

It's only really Adelaide who are truly bad North Queensland were old but not terrible everyone else was fairly strong or at least had strong points.

And what about South Qld, South Sydney, Gold Coast, Western Suburbs, St George? There were 22 teams, the most ever, with no extra player pool. Just pointing at arbitrary team lists and deciding they weren’t too bad doesn’t alter the facts. By 2000 there were 14 teams. A huge amount of those players wouldn’t have got near a first grade side.
