Vote for the World XIII

Recommended Posts

Everyone's had their say on how the Golden Boot should be decided, but now you have a chance to actually influence the composition of the World XIII, first selected by Open Rugby magazine in 1978 and still compiled every year and published by Rugby League World.

It works like this: we ask a panel of journalists and former players from around the world to list their top 5 players in the world in each position, based on both domestic and international performances - effectively any player is eligible for selection, no matter which competition they play in, no matter if they have represented their country or not - we then allocate points to each player in each position (so your top ranked fullback would get 5 points, your second ranked fullback four points, then three, two and one point respectively), add all the points from all the panel together and produce an overall result.

The top ranked player in each position (or top two for wing/centre/prop/second row) claims a place in our World XIII, and we also publish the 2,3,4,5 ranked players in each position in the next issue of Rugby League World which this year is published on Friday 30th November, so you can argue about the results in the run up to Christmas!

All the TRL Jury votes posted here will be compiled into one overall TRL vote and included with the rest of the panel's votes to produce the final result.

For reference, here's a list of every World XIII from 1978 to 2017
http://www.totalrl.com/a-complete-history-of-the-world-xiii/

To take part in this year's vote, just list your top 5 players in each position in this thread - please copy the table below and paste it with your selections into a new post, it'll make it easier for us to cobble the results together at the end if they're all in the same format.

You don't have to fill all five spots in each position, but you do have to come up with at least one name in every position to be counted.

If you want to add additional comments on the reason for your selections, please feel free to do so, but put them at the very end of the nomination table in your post.

NB: We take this really seriously at RLW, so any obvious joke nominations will be excluded, such as players who haven't played all season, or nominating every player from one club/country in each position.

Yep. I'm the one who'll be totting up the votes on here and I just can't be arsed trawling through dozens of joke posts to get to the genuine ones, so I'll just be deleting any that appear.

Yeh , hands up ! I’d probably get him in for DCE . No more than decent by his standards , often looked a bit of a struggle but still good enough to make the 5

I didn't vote because I can't even name five players for each position, and I don't even know all the playing positions anyway, but I enjoyed reading through the list of previous World XIII's. Lots of great players from the past that I do remember. I liked how it was broken down into GB players and how many times and when they had been included. I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to looking at sports statistics, and will be interested to see the 13 players selected this year.

Surprised to see Sculthorpe and Morley only appearing once each, modern day greats of the game .

Are we allowed to name a player in different positions? Valentine Holmes is one of the best fullbacks in the NRL but he is also the best winger in the world when it comes to rep games.

VictorRadley is going to be one of the superstars of Australian rugby league within two years or less. He is a very young home grown Sydney Rooster (one of the few)  who is currently under his most effective weight. Once he bulks up he will be unstoppable in attack and defence.

In keeping with the Rugby League tradition of changing the goalposts halfway through... we're actually publishing the World XIII in the next issue of RLW (due out Fri 30th Nov) not the final one before Christmas. Oops! The issue mix up was my mistake in the original post. Unlike Rugby League tradition, I'm actually taking responsibility and not trying to shift the blame.

So, you've got till the end of this week to submit your nominations.

Crack on!
