Gareth Hock

From the evening mail page.

GARETH Hock is facing at least four months on the sidelines when he undergoes surgery on a shoulder injury, Barrow Raiders chairman Steve Neale has confirmed.

The former England international forward suffered a tear in his shoulder when taking part in the Raiders' charity boxing night the week before Christmas and went to see a specialist in Preston on Thursday.

Hock was told he will need an operation, which is set for early next month, and is not expected to be back in action until the end of April or beginning of May at the earliest.

“Gareth has got an injury which was caused at the boxing event,” said Neale, speaking at the Raiders' annual sponsors night yesterday.

“He went in for an appointment with the specialist on Thursday and the prognosis is not that good.

“He has to have an operation on an AC injury and he's booked in for an operation the first week of February.

“It's a three to four month injury and it's hopefully end of April, middle of May he'll be back and he'll be like a new signing for us.”

The news comes as a blow to the Raiders ahead of their first pre-season game against Oldham tomorrow, with 35-year-old Hock being one of their stand-out signings for the 2019 Betfred Championship season.

However, Barrow have recently recruited versatile former Salford Red Devils and Huddersfield Giants forward Jordan Walne, while the Papua New Guinean trio of Stargroth Amean, Wartovo Purara Jr and Willie Minoga have now arrived at the club.

The three internationals were introduced to their new team-mates, supporters and sponsors at last night's event at the Chequers Hotel in Dalton, where the Raiders received a financial boost from the player sponsorship auction which raised over £22,000.

What a nightmare, not even the first game yet and the injury woes have begun. The Jordan Walne signing now looks of even more importance than first thought. Do we now go out and look for another prop? Can we risk going 4 months with Duffy, Walker, Riley and Minoga as our only recognised props?

Hmmm, ridiculous, but you had a good night? Wonder if Hock feels the same? Or the coach? Or the board? Or the fans? A lot of time and effort went into this signing.  For what? Re think for next year?

Ridiculous decision to have that event during pre season. I had a good night though, same time next year

Pre season is the best time. If you had it in the season even if someone picks up a minor knock they could mis games, it's just unfortunate due to the length of time.

No panic , there will be a couple of young Hungry props on their way from Wigan on loan .....

No panic, but why spend time, effort and money on signing a top class player if we could just sign a couple of hungry props from Wigan? Really, Wonder, think about it.

Because the young hungry props need a leader who has been there, seen it & got the t shirt. Hock will be a big influence in the dressing room and equally when he gets back on the field .

Think you miss my point wonder. Why risk injury to your new players on a pantomine show? It meant nothing but now he's out for maybe 4 months. For what? A few fans in a pub in Barrow? Of course he'll be an influence, but not for 4 months. I'll bet Cresta is fuming. So am I.

Pantomine is avoidable.

If Hock picked  up an injury at training I would understand, but showboating in a bar in Barrow, i can't. Yes, sheet happens. But not what I expect from a top pro. Maybe I don't get it?

that injury would've come out during the 1st few games anyway I reckon so maybe it happening when it did is a perversely good thing for Hock and the squad ?

I think you might have a good point there.

Can't believe barrow have let hock box in a pub just before the start of a new season. Its madness at it's best. Not only could it cost you vital league points by missing his obvious quality but also financially with league positions at the end of season. Its also going to cost your club financially to get loan signings to cover.

Looking forward to your visit to the mount on our first league match of 2019.

Spot on Dog. I think/hope the club have realised how stupid they have been. I understand the need for the club to raise funds, but this was just asking for trouble, and boy, have we got it. I get your concern financially but we don't do DR. We sign our players on for the season. No loan signings. It's the way to go. We are all looking forward to our games and good luck to you for the season.

Glad to hear no duel reg at barrow. Only if all clubs would follow suit. Good luck for tomorrow against the roughyeds.

We might not be dual reg but that doesn't mean we can't or haven't taken on loans. You're showing your ignorance again.

This is a really bad turn of luck for the club. However, I was at the boxing do and it wasn't like we put our star signing up against a professional boxer. There was no contact involved in the injury. At the time we thought he had popped his shoulder out. It could have happened at any of the pre season training sessions, especially the boxing sessions that they've been doing.

Dissapointed Barrow's marquee signing is injured & will miss a good chunk of the season.

I disagree with a few on here regarding it's one of those things injuries happen & so so.

I get the club needs to make money & without it teams won't survive but that boxing night would still have gone ahead & made the same amount if Hock didn't fight.

Getting Gareth Hock to sign is a fantastic achievement especially when Wigan were in for him.

I have been to these boxing fundraisers now half a dozen times & I see these injuries happen, you are putting sportsmen who don't box for a living or a hobby in danger of serious injuries because none will box properly it's all out or bust.

Tiredness after a couple of rounds gives the player more chance of injury.

IMO yes it's making good & quick buck but Barrow are now paying the price of there star player being out for half the season with prob full pay?

Needs to be 're thought if doing again, maybe ask ex players or fans to box & not current players who need to do there work on the pitch.

Probably should have had a medical before signing the player,if the shoulder came out that easy, might have been an old injury, I'm sure the club would not have let him box if so.hope the lad gets fit again,he will be worth the entrance fee alone, great player.

It's interesting to note that when Hock came to CP with Featherstone last season I think he came off the bench and only played a few minutes. I wonder how fit he is for a full game.

He was really unfit when he first joined Fev because he hadn't done any pre-season training (was signed in January), but as the season went on he played longer and longer minutes (when the ref didn't see fit to dispatch him, that is!).

Sorry Duk for showing my ignorance.
