Lyon 12-24 Carpentras

Villegailhenc 84-6 Entraigues

St Gaudens 30-46 St Esteve

Trentels 4-106 Carcassonne

Albi 14-12 Villeneuve/Lot

Toulouse Broncos 16-38 Limoux

Villefranche 0-58 Lezignan

Pia 14-44 Palau

Entraigue turned-up with just 11 players giving VARL barely a training run. Even without the Anderson brothers the home side racked up 16 tries. It was the third time in as many weeks the Vaucluse side had travelled down to the Aude - and picking up two wins on the road, They lie mid table in Elite 2. The Aquitaine minows Trentels from the third tier conceded a century including 18 tries against inform Carcassonne. Elite 2 sees big hitters Baho and VARL stretching out now with the bottom half struggling a bit for consistency.

Only really close encounter up at Albi, reversing last weeks league game against Villeneuve. Toulouses’ reserves though continue to show improvement, They gave the Grizzles a game a few weeks back at their place even if in between they fell heavily to the Canaris. So the quarter finals will see the following departments represented Vaucluse (1), Tarn (1), Roussillon (2) and the Aude (4). What chance that VARL land a derby draw against one of the three local Elite 1 sides ?

Good game at The Mazicou , Gordon.

Villeneuve looked a bit better first forty but Albi dug in  and took the spoils after the tonking the previous weekend at the Myre More.

Anselme no longer coach so changes on the way.

Why so few players for Entraigues?

Perhaps because it is difficult to motivate players for a long trip during the holidays to play a game lost in advance?

There is a real problem with this Villegailhenc team, which has a superior squad at many Elite1 clubs and in particular professional players declared as amateur.

Who is funding them?

Watching VSL, is their aspiration on League 1 and above a pipe dream?

Does anyone know where and when the Lord Derby and Championship finals will be held?

The French Rugby League's website (www.ffr13.fr) says 8th or 9th June (Coupe Lord Derby final) and 29th June  (Elite 1 final), but I don't think venues have been decided yet (but could be wrong on that!)

The former President of Carcassonne Dr Guilhem and family are involved. Three former Kiwi internationals Vinnie and Louis Anderson plus Patrick Au Van add on Pacific islanders Pelo, Pau nd Makisi on the roster. Tomorrow take on the leaders at home Baho. The Catalans ran Limoux close recently in the Cup - so should be a belter.

Quarter finals draw:

Villegailenc v Lezignan

Albi v Carcassonne

Palau v Limoux

Carpentras v St Esteve

Games to be played on the weekend 30/31 March

Elite 2

Villegailhenc 28-22 Baho

Match lived up to its expectations yesterday. Hosts with three former Kiwi internations on board just did enough. Down the slope first half saw he Catalans take the lead 12-6 but the hosts had too much fire power on the turn-round. Au Van scored a try and then made another to seal it. VARL have got what they would have wanted - a big clash with one of the Audes Elite 1 teams. On the field Baho and VARL could cut it in Elite1? Possibily. Not sure off the field. A long time back Carcassonne had two senior clubs. The illustrious Mick Murphy ex-St Helens back then featured for St Jacque who played at the other end of town.

*Tyron Pau 40 yrs Cook Islander ex -Limoux/ASC and now VARL

Are they the IEA of French RL?

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

You have to fancy VARL at home to FCL and Albi will fancy their chances too.

Morgan Carensac, who was Elite 2 player of the season 2018 transferred to Albi and started the season like a steam train but has since been banished to the reserves for some reason !

Probably St Estève.

They look a decent side with the likes of Lucas Albert and other top players  in the side but Albert played for the Catalans against HKR so maybe he will not be turning out for St Estève now ?

Pick of the draw VARL- FCL fascinating line-ups. Fakir,Stacul and Cardace all former Dragons players. Against them Ah Van and Louis Anderson both who played SL last year. Makisi done the rounds ASC,Whitehaven and Queensland Cup; player-coach Vinnie Anderson and Pau even at 40 yrs have looked after themselves. Mixed feelings having them joining forces in this VARL tier 2 set-up; but it adds some glitter & interest. Baho Sunday I think all French line-up with one former Dragon in centre Mathias Pala in their line-up. The draw though has kept the top four Elite 1 clubs apart - will they be all there come the semis?

Peter - yes, they also included Sunday Jeremy Guiraud an accomplished centre who played at Limoux last season. They also run a team at Federal level and U17s. Baho have an U19s side too at Elite level and a strong school of rugby cattering for all age groups from U5s to U15s. The Aude is doing OK presently. Some decent attendances of late too. The fall of Narbonne rugby union from Top 14 to amateur level gives the treizistes an opportunity to show their worth. Ideally located between TO-Dragons.

Yes, Narbonne is well placed for RL fans and of course just down the road from FCL.

USAP too look doomed so that's more good news for the Treiziste cause in the Aude and PO.

Guiraud is a useful guy to have around Gordon, I think he has five titles to his name with ASC and Limoux and still early 30s so a good recruit for Vinny & co. I recall him more as a fullback at ASC or am I imagining things ?

Limoux come to the Mazicou on saturday evening so that should be a decent game and a chance to watch Kriouache at his new club. I bumped into him at the TO v Toronto game and he says he is opening a restaurant with his future in mind. I think he's still on the books with Karl Harrison so maybe an interseason move to the Championship or One is on the cards ?

Cats need to impose themselves on the Rhinos on saturday and other potential relegation fodder I believe.

  • 2 weeks later...

Villegailhenc nearly caused a huge upset led going into the last quarter against one of the Elite 1 top sides Lezignan. True battle royal to the end. VARLA ten points up but younger and quicker visitors just did enough to reach the semi finals. Great turn-out - could have been bigger than the villages population (1,300). As expected the first four leading Elite 1 sides qualified.

VARL 20-28 Lezignan

Carpentras 14 - 50 St Esteve

Palau 14- 40 Limoux

Albi 20-45 Carcassonne

No Toulon  are struggling to run the elite 2 and junior team. The juniors  didn't go to villeneuve sur lot in the return fixtures so disqualified from knockout comps. They only had 14 players left and have 3 suspensions due to a bit of biff in the last round of the cup against carpentras,

Good to see Cahors having a decent run in the Falcou. Am i right in saying it was once a strong RL area?

Cahors RL was established after the war but have never been a major force. They amalgamated with Villefranche an hour to the east in the early 00s which lasted a season or so but reformed a joint juniors section a few years back. I seem to recall the club was formed following a chat between cronies in a barbers shop in the town after VE Day !
