Play it whenever, UK during the summer, warm places when its winter. Im not sure we need to limit fun to pre-season

The first Auckland one was good but the year later it seemed stale but far better than the AFLX.

The problem with rugby league is they over do the event. Rather then move the event to different cities each year to keep the freshness, they do 3 year contracts that mean by season three it's lost it's appeal.

It should be moved around every year.

Two years at a venue is possibly the ideal. It is usually not too difficult to get a YoY increase from Y1 to Y2 (provided Y1 isn't a complete stuff up), but for a lot of RL Events we plateau in Y3 and go backwards from then.

NRL should just lock in the next 6 years giving each venue 2. They could even mix it up so a venue gets it one year and then again 3 years later.

The problem is that unless the event is hugely successful and there's a bidding war for it (like SOO or a GF), the Governments offer significantly more money for extended contracts (3-5 years) than yearly ones.

So you end up in a cycle where for the event to make the most money possible (or to be profitable at all in some cases) it has to over stay it's welcome and tacitly undermine it's self.

It's an interesting conundrum for the codes trying to sell events, because they have to decide very early on whether they want to make as much money as possible as quickly as possible, or whether they want to risk it and not take as much money as possible to try and build it into a big event.

Totally agree and even SOO hype can get a bit much.

Maybe as an example the league could do a 2 year contract in a city over 6 year period.

A bit of fun that could be lucrative and help develop the game.

A potential enjoyable weekend, that could bring money into the game whilst also helping grow our sport.

Why would anyone in RL want that? 🤣

You could try that, but realistically no city or state is going to like it because these events are ribbon cutters for them, so the politicians who organise for them to be held in their city want to be their to cut the ribbon which isn't certain if it's happening 6 years in the future.

So again you'd almost certainly be devaluing the immediate return in the hope of building the product into a big success, but I mean there's no reason why the NRL (or any other organisation for that matter) couldn't try proposing a deal like that.

True....though wouldn't it be great if the game backed itself and didn't sell out. Surely "the product" as they keep telling us is good enough to back itself to do well in a one off event.

Play it on a rotation:

Melbourne

Sydney

Auckland

Brisbane

Perth

Repeat

Firstly playing it on rotation would be dumb, because it makes those markets feel entitled to the product which is bad for all sorts of reasons that I won't go into right now.

But on the main point, it's not as simple as just backing the product and it'll become big and valuable.

You've got to pick and choose you fights, because there's large sums of money and risk involved, and frankly not every event can be the big event at the same time.

Perhaps Super League could organise a weekend 9's event for preseason.

Could you suggest a venue ?

You could only use the Millenium Stadium,so they could close the roof to prevent supporters getting hypothermia.

I think 9s is a great idea and would love a SL 9s also. Millennium would have to be a pre season venue if in UK unless we went abroad. Or we have it mid season instead of Magic!

Yeah I'm sure a few pensioners will cover the costs of hiring a ground, flying the teams over and hotel bills.
