World Cup may still happen in the US

If it is in North America, and I hope it is, then hopefully they will have learned to ask for cash/bond up front this time.

Indication of progress towards becoming fully recognised in the Commonwealth Games is also interesting and positive.

Agree, the last world cup was a real disappointment in dodging the 'guarantee'.

I would say it looks like there will be no World Cup in 2025. The RFL wouldn't want to stage it again, and who knows what they will look like by then with funding etc. The NRL pay lip service to International football and don't want it either so this is a last, desperate attempt to find a buyer.

The big problem is that while we can come up with 12/16 teams of sorts the places they represent such as Samoa, Tonga, PNG, Cook Islands, Fiji, Lebanon have small populations, realitivly small infrastructures to attract companies to and ouside of the Southern Hemisphere would have little or no travelling fan base or expat presence. In the USA those nations would be a very hard sell.

Surely there will always be a world cup? Even if it meant reducing it to 8 teams or something.

Is there not a substantial Pacific island expat population in the US?

Expat populations are invariably less than the population of their old countries for the simple reason that only a fraction of that population ever emmigrates, and the combined population of those Pacific islands is just barely over one million.  So no, there isn't likely a substantial Pacific island expat population in the US.

There will definitely be a World Cup in 2025 and if we are struggling for hosts it will be held be Australia and whoever else again. It certainly will not just be cancelled.

If I'm still around by then we will see, but why do you think the Aussie's will ride to the rescue? they seem more than happy to run nines tournaments, much cheaper all round?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Islands_Americans 1.4 million with partial ancestry.

What about those of Tongan descent in NZ? Would that England vs Tonga game have got the same attendance in Tonga? (overlooking not having a similar stadium).

There is no chance of that happening. Even the half arsed Australian effort made money and there is a bid sitting on the table from New South Wales for 2029 already.

If not USA, it will be UK again or france.

My preference would be, if it doesn't go to USA, to copy Euro 2020 and sell it to multiple cities around Europe as a kind of magic style experience (though not 8 games held over 2 days) and make some money off the back of tourism.

Many countries might not have the backing or funding to hold a whole tournament but a weekend or so is much more doable.

'If dreams came true, oh wouldn't that be nice'

'But this ain't no dream we're living here tonight'?

You could do 8 games over 3 day weekends. Three weeks pool matches followed by quarters, semis and final.

Only need 6 cities to host. Maybe Barcelona, Toulouse, Paris pool matches followed by Quarters in Dublin, Semis in Edinburgh and Final in Cardiff.

What a world cup.

What about France?

With having a good domestic competition and 2 sides in the English league it would be a great option for them and the growth of the game in France.

I think it could be a potential for a trial "Southern France" WC with their Centenary WC in 2033 being more spread across the nation.

Agree if the WC in 2025 is streamlined a bit to say a max of 10 teams and 5 games max for the winners ie Group x 3 games, Semi and Final.

You could have France, Wales and England as Auto qualifiers from Europe

NZ, OZ, PNG as Auto from the SH. All 6 play alot of home born players and as such merit being in a WC above others.

Then 2 from Polynesia guaranteed. Probably Fiji and Tonga.

1 from the Americas guaranteed, maybe Jamaica  or the USA.

And 1 final  team by Repecharge. Probably Samoa win this over Scotland and Ireland and Lebanon.

There are more Samoans living abroad than in Samoa. US and NZ both have 150k+.

What sport do you know of which has a credible World Cup with anything less than 16 teams?

I wouldn't say it had to be streamlined but say have 60-75% of games in the South of France with a few of the harder sell group stage games in England (not England games though) just to give the FFRXIII the opportunity to run the event.

Hopefully then in 8 years time they'll be able to celebrate their Centenary with a successful WC more spread out across France.
