Yeah, your right Shaun, so did my dad. For me I took six slices of bread and butter (marg ) and a tin of baked beans to make cold bean sarnies.
My grandads story (he worked in Dearham andRisehow pits) was that miners took jam in their butties because that was the only filling that didn't go off down the pit.
You're right about meat sarnies though,because even if you could afford it the forced air down the pits would dry them out.
This didn't stop the steel workers, who had better wages, from naming their Workington counterparts jameaters which Whitehaven miners picked up on and so the story goes.
