Keep the sin bin i say.

Recommended Posts

I think a bit of biff should be an automatic sin bin at the most with no further action. i.e. no red card, further sanctions.

If it's a fair square up and no thuggery taking place (i.e. Ben Flower in the grand final) then the above should suffice.

If someone wants to punch someone on the ground / from behind, bite, gouge etc then this has to be a straight red.

Great to hear that! Hope that doesn't change under pressure from the NRL. When the biff was taken out.  Wrestling and niggling became more common place.  You can't do that as much when you might get belted.  I think fighting leads to less cheap shots as well, as players know they will get popped, look at the treatment Thurston has received lately.  I loved the spectacle and think its better for player safety overall.  Bring back the biff!

I don't like the automatic yellow. Referees already have the option of giving a yellow, allow them to use their discretion instead.

One thing that struick me about this Pathe News extract (for which thanks, Oxford) was how honest and simple the PTBs were.  No crawling or lunging forward another three yards by the tackled player and expecting the defence to concede.

Umpteen times on commentary in the season just ended, I heard a tackled player getting up moan to the referee that he was being interfered with, only to be told that he was moving forward.  So why wasn't he penalised?

Yeah, it's funny what you notice when watching old clips like this for me it was how honest the game was, that some of the forwards were really skillful with the ball in hand, and HKR dressed up as Salford.

Since the Aussies brought in professional wrestling. pile and peel and umpteen other things to slow the ruck down the man with the ball and the ref have been on real losers in the game.

Read some very early reports 1890 to 1910 and you will find that teams were continually finding ways to take advantage of the laws and pushing boundaries.

This pushing at the bounderies isn't new, that is why we continually have to tweak the laws to thwart the smart arrises who read the laws as good as any barrister.

ummmm, the game has never been as fast as it is in this era.

Look how slow the game and especially the passing and PTB's are in your clip. Players were never coached the incentive of a quick PTB.

Mistake in original post should have said ruck not game, has been changed.

Yes the game was slower but there are many excellent things about it that have been lost too!

No 10 m rule then but that is easy to miss. That has made a huge difference to ptb tactics.

Sport, amongst other things, is a dream-world offering escape from harsh reality and the disturbing prospect of change.

Well I for one didn't miss that Johnny and yes it has.

10m or 5m, the value of a quick PTB has always been.

An excellent lesson is how to stop them taking place from the Kiwis at the John Smiths!
