2016 State of Origin 1 - 1 June, Sydney - MATCH THREAD

Recommended Posts

Teams will be named at the conclusion of this round. Most of the pundits agree on most of the NSW side with only a few positions in question: FB, 7 and 9

Farah should have to produce today considering he has been out for a while and Ennis has been very good this year. Barring injury, Dugan should get the 1 jumper and Adam Reynolds seems to be favourite for the 7. Bench utility is up for grabs. New faces? Bryce Cartwright? Tyson Frizell? Jack Bird?

Meanwhile, north of the Tweed, with Chambers and Hodges missing from the 2015 team, these will probably be the only changes. Gagai, Feldt, Oates, and Justin O'Neill are probably fighting over a centre and 2 wing spots. Michael Morgan must have the 14 jumper nailed on by now.(IMO)

Corey Oates injury last night was just a head knock.

Scans have cleared the Dragons' No.1 of structural damage after he had hyperextended his left elbow when Paul Carter landed on him in the second half of Thursday night's 34-22 loss to South Sydney.

"There is presently lots of fluid in the joint causing pain and limited range as well as a minor strain to the medial flexor tendon," Dragons head of performance Tony Ayoub said on Friday.

"Fortunately, there is no structural damage and his elbow should settle down within the next week."

What I fancy and what happens are two different things. I was big on A Reynolds in the past couple of years. I think injury cost him one year. I don't think his kicking game has been so good this year. So dominant in the past.

What not one pundit on the link considered was Townsend partnering with Maloney. I think Townsend has been extremely influential in the Sharks rise this year. His partnership with Maloney has been almost instantaneous. That would be my pick.

I also listened to Daley on the Footy Show. Questioned about a place for Luke Lewis, Laurie responded by saying something to the tune of "well we do have a couple of younger guys in there now... Etc etc".

As far as I am concerned Origin is different from all other rep footy. I can understand a national coach selecting a squad with the eye on a WC in one or two year's time.

Origin is different. It is the same title each year and I believe there should be no compensation for age and little more for experience. The best players up to and including this current round should be the players selected.

I also think Townsend has improved heaps over the last 2 seasons. It also makes you wonder when the Pearce/Maloney combo was used to justify picking Maloney but that "combo" argument then goes out the window when talking about Townsend/Maloney or last year with Hodkinson/Reynolds.

I'd pick Luke Lewis every week forever but Lewis is probably gracious enough to stand aside for some younger guys. On form he should be there. On form, Ennis should have been ahead of Farah for the last few years. On form, shouldn't Moylan and Catwright be automatic? Or Jarrod Croker?

On form, Valentine Holmes should be well in front of Gagai and Feldt.

I think NSW are mentally scarred. Instead of thinking, "How can we flog them by 30 points?" we keep thinking, "How can we keep our losing margin respectable?"

I hear you. And consistently the Blues lose and consistently use a policy of in many cases, ignoring form.

Val would be a shot if he didn't get busted staying out late.

Again, graciousness shouldn't count but if the guy retires from rep footy, then that is understandable.

I fear the Blues will have a few regulars out there cause Daley can't hold a difficult conversation

Daley didn't name players in positions, just a squad. Bryce Cartwright is already ruled out with a thumb injury.

How the hell do Farah, Walker, and Ferguson make that squad? Farah has played what 3 games and done little. Walker has had a poor start and Feguson cant tackle or pass. Not a team based on form at all! Coote in for starters and Ennis over Farah every day of the week going on form this year.

It is a strong team but how Guerra gets in there I will never know. He has been shocking this season.

New South Wales will be without the services of one its stars after Josh Dugan was ruled out of the State of Origin opener with an elbow injury.

NSW released a statement on Sunday morning that confirmed the St George Illawarra centre's withdrawal from the June 1 clash at Sydney's Olympic stadium.

It is a major snag in the Blues' quest to reclaim Origin bragging rights, who have recalled Josh Morris after the Bulldogs back was initially left out of NSW's 17-man squad.

Cooper Cronk has rolled an ankle in training camp before Origin 1 and so there it is possible he may not play.

Yes I'm sure that was true. Probably tripped over Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Needless to say he will be playing.

Like a hardened NSWer, I got up early today so I'd have a few more hours to get depressed for the inevitable. Luckily, we Wests fans have had plenty of practice so bring it on.

Yes, today's the day.
A couple of hours from now battle will be commencing.
It's in Sydney. There'll be a massive home crowd.
This will make a good match progress thread.

The Queensland camp is increasingly confident of having playmaker Cooper Cronk on deck for Wednesday night’s State of Origin series opener against NSW in Sydney. Coach Kevin Walters will trust Cronk with the final call on his fitness — not doctors — as the influential No. 7 battles an ankle injury suffered at training on Friday.
Queensland’s only series defeat in the past decade came after Cronk broke his arm early in game one of 2014, but the Maroons are optimistic their halfback general will play after completing most of Tuesday’s captain’s run at ANZ Stadium.
Lock Corey Parker says much will depend on how Cronk pulls up on match day.
“The final call will be on ‘Coops’. He won’t go into a game jeopardising his position in the side,” Parker said.
“Look, it looked promising (on Tuesday) and, for his sake and for Queensland’s sake, I hope he does take the field.”

The xenophobic Sydney media must be worried, by over bigging up the Blues and a campaign bagging Cam Smith about talking to the Refs and getting so called favouritism and calls cause he's Aussie Captain! It will be the usual tough game and the Maroons should shade it!

The Blues will suffer from blooding more youngsters this year but will benefit next year and could start their own mini run while the Maroons play catch up. Big Mal knew this would be coming and has dropped it in Walters lap!

Morning all, this fine sunny day. Hope you all enjoy the game. I'll be giving it a pass (will actually work to-day) ;)

Somebody has to Irish Saint.  :beach:

Some late news:
Blues have sprung a late chage ahead of Origin I, with lock Greg Bird dropping back to the bench and prop forward James Tamou taking his place in the run on side.
Meanwhile the Queensland camp has taken a sigh of relief following confirmation Cooper Cronk will line-up tonight.
It looked touch and go for the star halfback after he rolled an ankle at training late last week.
But the Maroons have confirmed Cronk will take his place in the side to take on NSW.
