NRL vs AFL

Recommended Posts

Anyone looking to see how TGG fairs against AFL down under then I would suggest looking at this very informative website http://www.theroar.com.au/2016/08/04/its-official-the-nrl-is-getting-smashed-by-the-afl/?utm_campaign=most_discussed

Interesting points:

* Total 2015 attendance: AFL 6,886,266 vs NRL 2,495,633

* Average match attendance 2015: AFL 33,428 vs NRL 14,944

* Broadcast deal $value per year: AFL $418m vs NRL $360m

One of the smart things the AFL has done is have extremely low ticket prices for people on low income or unemployed. NRL has more expensive tickets as far as i know.

AFL markets itself better and at the end of the day the reason they get more $$$ is because they have more teams spread across the states of Australia.

Our game has QLD,NSW,Victoria and ACT + NZ, where is WA,SA? what about Tasmania?, fact is NRL needs to expand and the next step is WA a perth based side would do the NRL a lot of good although that is at least another 5-6 years away.

The author of the article in the OP skirts very carefully around the TV viewing figures, doesn't he?

I'm not saying that some of his points aren't extremely valid, especially regarding the NRL's attitude towards expansion, but it does come across rather like a recently-banned troll's relentless posting of positives about another code under the pretence of concern for RL.

Tasmania has been crying out for first a VFL now an  AFL team for over 100 years, after they have supplied the VFL and now the AFL with players forever. The NRL really has a chance here to get one over the AFL by having a NRL team based in Hobart......Bring on the Tassie Devils

Totally agree NRL could really get one over the AFL if it had the balls to place a team in Hobart but sadly I don't think they have the balls.

On the subject of balls,I don`t think Tasmania would know what a Steeden looks like,so what`s the point in a waste of time and money venture to the Apple Isle? I think R L Winger lives in a world of his own.Look at the attendances a good team like Melbourne get, usually about 12,000,5,000 below the lowest attendance the worst AFL game in Melbourne got for this weekend,Collingwood v Gold Coast. We don`t want to go down the same path of the game in England where they`ll sponsor any Tom,Dick or Harry team just for the sake of it. That`s not expansion,it`s a crackpot waste of money that should be put back into the game where it`s actually played.

Diddy Donuts, that`s a good one!! Yeah, they have Rugby League in quite a few places in the world, but not to a degree where the game`s going to stand on it`s own two feet,so not worth the thought. Where`s the infra structure down in Tassie? How many supporting clubs and junior clubs,it all counts. I`ll say no more, wouldn`t like to keep upsetting you mate, though the last time we crossed swords,I think you were dreaming about a second Kiwi team or something based in the Pacific Islands. Really?

AFL wins hands down.. When it comes to racist trash fans & being a sport no other country in the world has any interest in.

racism aside, being the number 1 sport in Aus is the AFL's strategy, not popular globally. Unfortunately RL is neither.

Melbourne Storm are now on 18.000 plus members. Thats not bad for a Sports team in AFL Land that  struggle to get much press. The Storm have been steady in how the club has developed and while success has helped they have had to face many obstacles like being a minority Sport/Club as well as obviously the Salary Cap Scandal which could easily have destroyed them. But they are still losing a good chunk of money each year.

Hopefully Gold Coast can build on this year and getting 18.000 for the Panthers game is great news after what the club has been through and how they were getting 8 or 9.000 a couple of seasons ago. Another club that has potential if run properly! But it has cost the game a fair bit of money so far and is still a long way from being a viable club.

I would hope that the NRL etc concentrate on Perth as the next area. Hobart and Darwin just are some way off what Perth can offer (and other areas like Wellington, Central Queensland etc). Getting one over the AFL should not be on the list really. But I would hope that if we are going to look to bring in a team or two that we do it properly and look to take Internationals, SoO and other games there and work with the local amateur setup. Like we have seen with Melbourne and even Gold Coast and Auckland/NZ Warriors these things take time, effort and money. Just bringing a team in because AFL doesnt have a team there is poor decision making. Hobart may get 10.000 for one off games and have a local League, but it lacks the money, people and International presence that Perth, Wellington, Central Queensland etc have. I would think Hobart is a fair way down the list of ever having an NRL team, when you look at other areas in Australasia and maybe further in the Pacific Rim.

The AFL can't survive without taxpayers hand outs.

The game has a strong drug culture.

They fudge the home crowds for the Lions the Suns and the Giants.

They literally give out 1,000 of free tickets for the the above clubs home games.

Rugby League is the most watched sport on Australia TV.

All correct, The culture of drugs and racism in the ALF is disgraceful. It's amazing any right minded parent would allow there child to play this weird sport.

so Crows v Eagles pulled 949k and the Storm v Broncos pulled 811k.

That wouldn't suggest RL is the most watched. It is very well supported though. Fortunately I love both sports and get double the pleasure :)

They are only the metro figures and don't include regional NSW AND QLD that have a larger population than Adelaide and the Fox numbers for NRL dwarf the AFL.

And you should take anything in the roar with a pinch of salt, check with anyone on leagueunlimited, it is the biggest anti league website out there.

I wouldnt base any argument or statement based on statistics- especially TV Stats that often do not tell the whole story and can easily be bent or used to fit how you like. How long did these people watch for? How many swapped between the two? How long do you watch before it registers on the statistic? Whether AFL or NRL has more viewers doesnt really interest me personally. I dont really care how many turn up to watch games etc as again many are on freebies etc. I only care for how my club is going on and off the field.

I am proud that Melbourne dont just sit their and do nothing but get out and promote the club and the game to a new audience. The build up work this week has been great with Cam Smith on the AFL TV Show and the club offering discounts to AFL season Ticket holders and going out in Melbourne and other Victorian areas and promoting the game and sport. The club has had to always do the hard work as Rugby League is an unknown sport in Melbourne and Victoria. Its one of the reasons I follow them as they take the game to millions of people who know little about the game. 20K for last week for a regular League game is great. Over 18K memberships is fantastic for any club, even more so one like Melbourne. People say we dont need Melbourne Storm. Wrong we do as it opens the game to a new market and grows the game beyond its heartlands. The benefits outweigh the negatives in so many ways for me. This week with Steeden the Storm are promoting the Sharks game and sport big style. With no AFL games its a chance to seize an opportunity to increase the profile of the game and Club.

Yep, the Storm are definitely seizing their opportunity this weekend. Great to see. Invites even went the the AFL management. Interested to see if they attend.

Not sure of anyone who has said the NRL doesn't need the Storm, but I would definitely argue alongside with you that the NRL does need them.

I am going to predict 25k plus this weekend. I would even throw a shilling on a full house!

I must admit I was one of those people who wanted the Storm to fail but have recently changed my mind and see there value and have come appreciate we are watching some of the best players in a lifetime - Smith, Cronk & Slater.  My dislike of the Storm was mostly based on them being a club created by Murdoch whom I have not a single kind word to say about.

I think the NRL's issue is that Tasmania is a pretty small market. Hobart has a relatively small population. I don't think the NRL will put a team there any time soon. Same with Darwin.
