How many "Remain" Tories are there in Parliament?

Recommended Posts

Given what's happened at Richmond, is it possible that this may scare "Remain" Tories into rebelling in any Parliamentary UK debate on Brexit?  The Government has a working majority of 13 over all other parties.  But there are approx.. 10  UKIP, DUP and UUP MP's who could be expected to vote for Brexit so say 23/24.  The question then is,  are there enough Tories  to upset the applecart?  Would they dare, or would they dare not?

Hasn't Corbyn already said that Labour wouldn't vote against?

Well then are there enough rebel Labour and Tories combined to defeat the government on a Brexit vote? Again given what's just happened, maybe they'll be looking at the safety of their seats.  I think the referendum result shocked a lot of people, I think many people thought they could vote out and it wouldn't happen.  I think what happened last night is an indication of this mood.

Yup.

Without getting any assurances about what kind of Brexit he might be waving through.

In fairness Jeremy would face criticism whatever he did. If he had said he would vote against brexit he would be criticised for not listening to the electorate.

As he is very much a self styled people politician I think he had to take this position.

Indeed. But isn't one of the things people look for in politicans, especially party leaders, leadership?

And, given that Corbyn very obviously favours leaving, if he were a smart politician he could sniff the advantage in being seen to be enthusiastic about advocating for an EU departure which protected the rights of workers whilst ensuring those areas likely to suffer most from the withdrawal of EU support were his focus.  It would cause difficulties in May's balancing act whilst making it clear that Labour was pushing for a Brexit that gave the people of Britain the best deal.

Surely Corbyn's stance should be we will decide when we see what is on offer, if its a good deal we won't try to block it, if we think its a bad deal we will vote against.

Of course there will be nothing on offer as negotiations can't start until we vote to accept A.50

That's exactly why May is nowhere near her idol Thatcher.  She's more of a Michael Howard in drag.

Theresa May is prime minister in name only, until she calls a general election, she is the chosen of the few, and as such should not have a mandate until she faces up to the General Electorate

She wasn't even chosen by the few; she fell into the job unopposed.

No, she was chosen, chosen by newspaper editors who either dished the dirt on some or threatened to on others.

A leader no-one chose, leading a party directly against its elected manifesto and going all the way to the Supreme Court to subvert the will of Parliament and replace it with the will of the Queen's unelected Prime Minister, essentially overturning centuries of Parliamentary supremacy.

PMs are always chosen by the few.  We don't elect PMs.
