A Change to Benefit The International Game

Recommended Posts

The problem with the international game seems to be money - because the top sides pay players and they get treated better.

Can we stop them being paid money for international representation by the nations, and instead set aside some of the league sponsorship money for clubs?

Governing bodies could then give it to clubs for players who play internationally for any country, with a cap on the total money each club can receive to balance it out.

Positives:

Motivates clubs to encourage players to represent at international level as they will get extra money.

Encourages clubs to sign players who will represent at international level as they will get extra money.

Encourages players to play for whichever nation they are eligible for and feel most attached to, as there is no other financial reward other than their club paying them more to attract them to the club in the first place.

More likely international talent will be spread evenly throughout the clubs.

I don't know whether this is the finished article, but encourage everyone to constructively look at it and develop it or give other ideas to form something we might all be happy with.

If the RLIF had some money they could pay any NRL or Super League player a flat rate for playing internationals instead of individual nations paying for match payments. Next step would be making sure most nations play the same amount of games so players get equil pay and equil games played. So a players would be encouraged to play for lower ranked nations because it been easier to make the squad then high end nations with massive amounts of talent.

Of course the big hole in this plan is ....... RLIF don't have money for that kinda thing. So, yeah couldn't be done right now. But in theory it would work.

I don't mind people disagreeing with it - as long as they confirm they're happy with the way the international is currently, or have another suggestion of they're not.

It's the replies which offer nothing to sort it out despite complaints it's not right the way it is that hold everything back

I like the idea in theory, and the RLIF should have much more money after the next World Cup, and as they will own the Intercontinetal Cup they can have tighter control around fees there and at the World Cups.

Concerns would be:

1) whilst the playing fee could be leveled on match fees, what about sponsorship?

2) if we are reducing fees for Aussies and Kiwis, don't we risk them not turning up. We already see plenty of pull outs.

I may be wrong but SOO is far more lucrative in fees and sponsorship than interntional RL. Therefore, if RLIF mooted change to open SOO eligibility to non-Oz Interntionals, that will for me have a far bigger impact?

That won't stop Radrardra, but will most others, and to stop Radrardra, you just extend residency qualification period, which RLIF have also mooted.

So maybe we should have patience with their efforts, as opposed to a revolutionary initiative which could reduce the number of tier 1 nation layers who actually turn out, and thus weaken interntional RL further?
