London pub for the Challenge Cup final

Recommended Posts

Obvious reply is get yourself to Wembley. Failing that, Riley's on Haymarket cannot be described as a 'good pub', but I'm sure they will put it on if you ask nicely.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

For gawd's sake man, if you look at RLFans there's plenty of people offering cheap tickets after someone's dropped out, just arrange to meet up, buy one and get yourself there.

Bit of a strong reaction there to a genuine question (and a newcomer - it no surprise that new people to these forums describe it as a hostile environment sometimes!).

So I assume from this that if SKY Sports are showing an FC home game live there will be absolutely nobody in the bars in Hull watching the game as every Hull fan will be at the KC in person?

Apologies if it looked like a hostile reply but like has been mentioned since, it's probably nearly as easy to buy a chesp ticket and go to the game rather than find a pub showing the game. Let's face it, if you can post on this forum asking about stuff you can easily get a cheap ticket on the Internet. No offence meant.

Also I'm posting from my phone so I've no idea how new the OP is as I'm browsing the mobile version.

Certainly didn't mean my post to come across like that, but can see how it did so apologies. My point was more that, having sought out RL in central London pubs over the last couple of years, it really isn't that easy (especially if you want somewhere without a sticky carpet). So Wembley itself is definitely the easiest option.

I get your point and if it was just me I would do just that but I live in London and have family/friends down so a group of 10. Not all want to watch the game so it allows some of us to watch and others browse shops nearby etc.

I have in the past watched games at The Hope in Fitzrovia, and there have been some RL people in there too. I'm gonna call them up and see if they will put it on. Tends to be pretty quiet around there at the weekend and a much nicer option than Rileys.

In general though it would be good to have a regular option centrally. I tend to get a day pass on NowTV but always good to catch a game in a pub.

Three years back my good lady took me to London for my 50th b'day. We had a wander round all the touristy bits and ended up at Buckingham Palace, well, outside anyway.

As we wandered away from there I suddenly realised it was K.O. time for Hudds v Leeds in a RL cup 1/4 final. As we strolled along, we happened upon the Buckingham Arms so wandered inside more in hope than much else. To my astonishment it was already on the telly and remained on until the end of the game.

So if your friends want to do a bit of tourism while you watch the final, that may well be the perfect place.

Not a bad idea. The Hope on a Saturday afternoon isn't usually busy, so if they can probably put a Wembley final on the screen. Over the years they've been happy oblige. Don't forget that they are usually happy to put it on upstairs as well, if that helps - and the upstairs bar will be totally empty.

Fair enough guys.  I guess I am a bit sensitive on this as I live only a few miles from Wembley and I can't make Saturday for family reasons and I am going to miss what I expect the best Challenge Cup final (on the pitch and in the stands) that there has been for a very long time.

I used to organise the London pub RL nights out a few years back, which included the Hope, and before that the Carpenters Arms and the Pontefract Castle (and before that it was organised by Kentish Barry of London Saints at the Northumberland Arms nr Baker St!). Usually only do the GF and tests at the Hope now, due to lack of time.

I reckon you'll be ok getting the final on at the Hope with sound (which you should ask for downstairs as much better than upstairs), if the Kiwi guy, Phil is still there running it. Just say Steve the RL fan recommended it as a pub to show the game. The real there is pretty good too with usually 4 cask ales and several tap IPA ales.

If you get the game on it would be good If you could check if they'll be showing the GF.

If they cant show the game then a fall back option is the Jetlag bar 5 min away which I have always got the game on with sound, as they have several screens and it is never busy as more away from Tottenham Court Road. Best to ring and check in advance for both places

You must have posted just before me!

Incidentally Garvers is another relic from the London Saints pub meetups despite neither of us supporting Saints

As Lobbygobbler says, the Hope is a decent pub, or at least it was when I last got a chance to go. Because it is close to Tottenham Court Road station, it is usually rammed on a weekday 'til about 10 to 8, when the theatre crowd hurry off to see the latest Andrew Lloyd-Webber knock-off*.

On a weekend, it should be fine.

*our lawyers would like to point out that Mr Lloyd-Webber has never been successfully prosecuted for staggeringly blatant musical theft. So all the tunes in his musicals are entirely and officially original. Honest!

Its been a while since youve been allowed out, ;) Jetlag bar is a pile of rubble, raised to the ground. It closed a long long time ago.

Was good thanks, they switched it on for us as soon as we got there, watched the build up and then a fantastic game. What an advert for our sport!?

We were the only ones there though apart from one lad who'd popped in for a beer and happened to like rugby league. He stayed there for the game too.

I forgot to ask about the grand final but sure with it being on a Saturday(rather than a Friday when it's rammed) they'd be up for showing it.

Ha ha, 3 years back? 33 shurely? :P

You're quite right, I do actually look 33 but no, sadly I've a few more years on the clock than that.
