Shock as Benji Marshall set to sign for the Broncos

Recommended Posts

I couldn't believe it when I read he was only 31 as he's been a shadow player of his former self for the past 3-4 seasons. I think he peaked in the 2010 season and the 4nations final and it's been a steady decline ever since.

He just joins the list of RL players who returned from RU worse than when they went in and is now on the wrong end of selection decisions.

Sadly your correct. I can't think of one player who returned to our game from union better than we he left us.

Union certainly blunts the skills of Rugby League that's for sure.

The only exceptions would be Jason Robinson and Henry Paul after their short spell playing for bath in 1996. Granted they only played a handful of games but it wasn't long enough to knock the skill and conditioning out of them.

"It is understood Marshall will be considered as a centre" Really?????? Who on earth would put Benji Marshall in as a centre :fie:

Can only realistically see him as a utility on the bench like Nikorima was, unless they get injuries in the halves. Not sure how they're going to fit in all of Milford, Hunt, Boyd, Mead and Marshall

Think he'll more probably be back up to Hunt and Milford. Unless Hunt leaves - and that may happen.

That was an off-season loan for a few games, just like it was for Gary Connolly and Inga the same year. I don't think it really counts as the same as making a full commitment to RU.

This is Wayne Bennett's team, so he must see something in Benji he can use to the Broncos' advantage. And Bennett's a pretty shrewd judge.

Mind you, i can't imagine what that is.

St.George played Benji at scrum half which he admitted a couple of weeks ago on NRL 360 that he is not,he`s a stand off. So methinks this is Bennett`s way of getting the best out of Anthony Milford,so I`m therefore looking forward to seeing Benji playing in the Queensland Cup for either Redcliffe,Norths,Ipswich,or the other feeder team,Wynnum Manly. We will see.

What about SBW?

What about him?

Defensively he wasn't as good as when he left the Bulldogs. Attacking wise he was probably on par with how he was previously.

Anyway back on topic. I can't see Benji playing in the centres, that's just journo speculation. I can see him coming off the bench to replace Milford or Hunt or more likely coming on at six with either Milford or Boyd taking up a ball playing loose forward role.

I don't see any reason Benji couldn't play in the centres if need be. I'm not so sure about fullback, but if he gets really fit and trains there maybe he could get up to speed there. Also can obviously play halves and if need be, dummy half. If you can get a guy like this, with all his experience and ability, for cheap, why not? He's got a point to prove, so could answer a few critics and the Dragons will need to blame someone else for their hopelessness (Widdop and the coach both in the firing line now their scapegoat is gone!).

He had a point to prove at Wests after Scott Prince left and didn't prove anything except that he was no Scott Prince.

He had a point to prove at Wests after Robert Lui was punted and didn't.

He had a point to prove when he went to RU but didn't.

He had a point to prove at St George ......... I'm sensing a pattern here. The only point Benji has proved in the last 5 years is that he's not half the player he thinks he is.

You're obviously not a fan, which is fair enough, so I don't know if it's really worth arguing, but here's my response anyway:

After Prince left, Marshall went on to win the Golden Boot in 2010. Giving Lui the credit for his form in 2010-2011 is laughable - Lui was barely first grade standard, and Marshall was one of the most dangerous players in the comp. At St George, he was one of their best players in 2015, taking them to their only finals appearance of the last 6 years and finishing 2nd in the Dally M in the process. Is he now the superstar his profile suggests? No. Is he worth $100,000 as a back up utility? Of course!

I am a Wests Tigers supporter so I may be biased. So let's take and impersonal gauge of Benji's merit, his contract price.

2014: $900K (which he knocked back to take $500K in RU)

2015: $600K (after which his employer at the time reduced their next offer to $300K, at which price he got no takers)

2017: $100K
