Kelvin surely has to take the Order of the Assclown for a lifetime's devotion to being someone with a more punchable face than Nigel Farage.

Absolutely disgraceful, reprehensible poisonous article.

I am vehemently against the way Islam seems to treat females, and just don't get why they make or expect them wear these things. It's up to them, though, in this, one of the world's leading democracies.

Not all Muslims are terrorists and not all terrorists are Muslims.

Sorry, didn't see that, been a very busy week so far!  That said, the wider point of The Sun being a reprehensible media resource full of thwaites is worth making again and again.

Up to who? A young woman brought up to be "modest" under the influence of Father, Uncle, brothers, Mother and sisters just might have not a lot of say in the matter even  in this one of the worlds leading democracies.

You may be right, but this is not a 14 year-old girl with little education. She is a woman, an adult and an intelligent one, too. I imagine she has been to university (she would need some kind of degree in journalism in order to become a news presenter) and so been away from the influence of family members. She has been taught to question what she is being told and should be able to make her own mind up on things like what to wear. I wouldn't underestimate her intelligence.

I would question the Sun's use of the word "hijab" rather than the much less provocative "headscarf". If not to incite racial hatred, then why?

And of course the effects of religious indoctrination stop at 14 as does the influence of the family that initiated it. My grandmother wore a headscarf on windy days, this is not a headscarf.

No, of course the effects of indoctrination don't stop at 14. That was just an age chosen as roughly a transition age between childhood and adulthood. The main point was that she has been educated to a high level and has a mind of her own.

My second point was that the Sun deliberately chose the word hijab in order to incite racial tension. (Didn't they make a fuss about Abu Hamza inciting racial tension? Didn't they demand his arrest and extradition? If that was right for him, and I think it was, it is surely right for the Sun to face the same charges?)

Shouldn't we be above this sort of hypocritical journalism (sic) in the 21st century?

I agree.  I don't want this thread to get into the muslim issue but I've got a good personal example.  One of my wife's best friends lives in Malaysia, she went to university here where she met my wife.  Back in Malaysia she wears the full headscarf and outfit, nice modern colours rather than the severe black stuff, she wears it because she prefers to wear it for her own personal comfort.  When she comes to Britain she wears western clothing because she knows through brutal experience that she'll get at least one bit of nasty verbal abuse per visit if she were to wear her choice in clothing.  THAT's what the articles like the original post generates, it makes slack-jawed yokels think they have a right to abuse people based on their personal choice in clothing.

Being educated to a supposed high level does not qualify you as having a mind of your own, whatever that means.

referring to the headscarf by its actual name, because it is worn as a follower of a particular set of beliefs and not merely as a headscarf is absolutely reasonable.

Not agreeing with you doesn't mean someone doesn't have a mind of their own.

What?

The idea that inculcated young Muslim women are somehow freed from their religious beliefs and influences at a particular age and with a particular education standard is patently not true. It has nothing to do with abstract ideas like  mind of their own nor whether people agree with me or not.

A) as long as I can see her face, no, though I cant sympathise with adherents of any religion, especially an irrational one that deems it necessary for females to cover their heads.

Appalling expression of naked rabble rousing, stereotyping and prejudice from the Sun.

Islam doesn't require women to cover their heads.

The Islamic holy book is actually quite a rational document, even if you don't believe its basic premise.

Unfortunately some of its adherents believe that it does, which is the problem.

Our canteen at work has decided to start providing a couple of newspapers for people to read while having food. Their choices were The Sun and the Daily Express. I think I may have offended the manager with my comments on their choices.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

I wonder why he now decides to use "headscarf"?

Trying to deflect attention from his inflammatory article?
