Understrength Aussies to play Scotland

Recommended Posts

Meninga:  “I’ve always said I will give all our players an opportunity to play,” Meninga said. “We played what I thought was our Test team against New Zealand so all the other players will get an opportunity against Scotland for sure."

This "understrength" Aussie team will tear into little pieces the bogus Scotland team. It will show the absurdity of the RFL's concept of the Four Nations.

why because one team will beat another by a good way?

That doesnt make a tournament absurd, otherwise most major sports tournaments around tge world are absurd.

Thats the spirit, its this amazing try and see attitude that continues to strengthen international RL....

Another sport's world competition (played with a few more players) but a good example as to why forward thinking is needed. We can't have enough international tests.

In 1995, NZ dismantled Japan 145-17. In 2015, Japan (strengthened by a few imports) defeated South Africa at the death.

With your kind of thinking, Japan would have been excluded of said competition and consigned to playing much weaker opponents. As it stands, the 2015 performance made a strong impression on the country.

Back to RL, I do agree with you on the 'bogus' nature of that Scotland team. But we need more internationals even lopsided ones. What we don't need however is player poaching and farcical eligibility rules.

Japan should have switched to RL decades ago...they'd be far better suited to league imo...

Anyway back to lumping on scotland...

In all seriousness...you can get 28/1 on the HT-FT result, scotland to win the first half & australia to power through and win the 2nd...

No thurston,no cam smith, cronk & maloney hate each other....scotland putting in a strong first 40 before australia figure it out isn't unthinkable is it?

OLDHAM RLFC

The RFL's concept?

By this I mean lumping together in the qualifying playoffs, nations that have a domestic competition and/or pro or semi-pro teams (France, Wales), with nations that have none of those features (e.g. Scotland). The fourth nation should have been selected simply by a playoff qualifier, or two, between France and Wales. Rugby league entities like Scotland are simply means of puffing up the World Cup playing numbers. Even USA and Lebanon are more authentic rugby league nations (in terms of having domestic competition) than Scotland.

Just for anybody who doesn't want to read the article linked. This is an Australian game day squad selected from the 4 Nations squad which contains the best 24 players available for selection from the leading Rugby League playing nation on the planet.

They have not drafted in some aussie tourists on holiday or some under 19 players to make up the squad.

To call it under strength devalues our sport. For the love of God can we not let others do that and actually talk up the game ourselves.

The worst thing in that article is how surprisingly weak Mal Meninga comes across stating he is having an ongoing conversation with Cam Smith about resting him. He is the coach ffs pick the team you want and ignore the egos, admittedly the desperation to play international rugby from Smith is fantastic to see.

With the other changes Moylan is a better player than Darius Boyd whose rep career has been largely an armchair side bro g gifted tries by Inglis at centre.

Yes it is but he has been like Wayne Bennett's adopted son throughout his club career and I would argue at least a dozen players would have been made to look just as good as him by playing in the maroons side this last decade outside GI.

Put it this way he is about the same level talent wise as Brett Morris and I bet the try scoring rate of Morris would double if he swapped his blues wing berth for the Queensland left wing spot.

I am not suggesting btw that Boyd is a terrible player.

It is possible to be vastly overrated whilst still being a good player and international standard. His finishing does not remotely compare to a Denny Solomona or Radradra nor the speed and step of a Ben Barbs. At Newcastle without the benefit of being surrounded by superstars he looked rather average ( admittedly significant personal issues played their part).

Deluded pom? Would Boyd be your pick for full back for the Kangaroos if you could pick any Aussie eligible player currently in the game.

The Aussies currently have some very good FBs and Boyd is one of them. He has the knack of being in the right place at the right time. It's all subjective. I'm a fan of Moylan's and see him taking the Lockyer path and eventually moving to 6.
