Doncaster Rugby League recorded a narrow win at Hunslet Hawks to avenge last month's Challenge Cup defeat in a result which saw the Dons go top of the League 1 momentarily.

Gary Thornton was forced to make changes following Mason Tonks' leg break last week, Mike Kelly returned to the side, along with Iafeta Paleaaesina on dual registration from Hull FC.

The Dons got off to a flying start in the match, Kyle Kesik's fired a sharp flat pass to Kelly who went over inside six minutes.  Tom Carr added the conversion to give the Dons a 6-0 lead.

Hunslet hit back though after some great handling of their own, Danny Ansell fired a fine pass out wide which was met by James Duckworth in the right corner.  Simon Brown was unable to convert to ensure the Dons remained in front.

It took less than four minutes for the Dons to respond though, Brad Delaney read Jordan Howden's grubber kick perfectly to score under the posts, with Tom Carr adding the extras.

The Dons extended their lead even further nine minutes from the interval, Jason Tali broke through the Hunslet defence in what was a fine break and passed to Delaney in support who went over under the sticks for his second try.  Tom Carr once again converted the try.

Just before the break Delaney almost scored his hat-trick, he dummied superbly and darted for the line, however he was held up just short.

Half Time: Hunslet Hawks 4-18 Doncaster

After the break a rejuvenated Hunslet came out of the blocks firing and were quickly back into the match.  Daniel Williams unlucky not to score, he was held up over the line and in the next tackle, full-back Jimmy Watson weaved his way through the Dons defence to score under the posts.  Brown added the goal to reduce Doncaster's lead to 10 points.

Hunslet carried the momentum and in the 52nd minute the hosts edged even further back into the match.  Liam Welham lost possession of the ball 10 metres from his own line and Jake Normington pounced to score Hunslet's third try.  Brown added the conversion from out wide reduced the deficit to 18-16.

Just after the hour mark Brown kicked a penalty to level the scores, before Richie Barnett gave Hunslet the lead for the first time in the match.  Brown kicked to the corner on the last tackle and Barnett beat Sheriff in the air to score.  Brown was unable to convert the try, meaning Hunslet lead by just four points.

It was the 67th minute before Doncaster had a real opportunity with the ball in Hunslet's half after an onslaught of attacks from the hosts and Thornton's side took full advantage when Jason Tali barraged his way over the line.  Tom Carr kept calm with the conversion, ensuring Doncaster regained a 24-22 lead.

That try seemed to deflate the hosts and the Dons kept their nerve and had the momentum.  The game was then sealed three minutes from time, Kyle Kesik sent prop forward Mark Castle over the line from close range against his former club, his third try in three games for the Dons.  Tom Carr kept up his 100% kicking record, to ensure that when the full time whistle went, the Dons sat at the top of the pile in League 1.
