NRL Players off contract end of 2016

Recommended Posts

A lot of these players will be re-signed but, such is the nature of the salary cap limit that all the big pieces have to fit into the puzzle first before most of the grafters and "future potential" spots are filled. From my observations of SL, many clubs need experienced, game-manager types and tackle-robots, rather than megastars.

BRISBANE BRONCOS

Carlin Anderson, Greg Eden, Herman Ese’ese, Matt Gillett, Lachlan Maranta, Francis Molo, Kodi Nikorima, Tom Opacic, Corey Parker, Travis Waddell, Jarrod Wallace

The big ones here are Gillett and Parker. I think they'll give Parker another year and Fox Sports seem to be grooming him for media work so another year's par-time apprenticeship in that field will help with the $$$.

If Gillett goes to the market heaps of clubs will want him and he won't be leaving NRL for years yet.

They'll keep Jarrod Wallace. He played 25 games last year and he's played every week this year. As a 24-year-old prop, his best years are ahead of him and he would be the obvious replacement for Thaiday and/or Parker.

Nikorima should stay there (with the NZ National Coach) Between interchange, injuries and Origin, he'll get plenty of NRL games in a strong team where the weight doesn't always rest on him.

CANBERRA RAIDERS

Kurt Baptiste, Luke Bateman, Adam Clydsdale, Rhys Kennedy, Brenko Lee, Jeff Lima, Sam Williams

I would keep Baptiste and Bateman, maybe Sam Williams and maybe Brenko Lee.

They have 4 Kennedys in NSW Cup and I can't remember which is which. Lima to retire and Clydsdale, a hooker, is unnecessary.

CANTERBURY-BANKSTOWN BULLDOGS

Tim Browne, Dane Chisholm, Greg Eastwood, Pat O’Hanlon, Tony Williams

They are currently dealing with Eastwood. Tim Browne? I was surprised they let Shawn Lane go and took Faitala-Mariner in a swap.

Chisholm and O'Hanlon are just injury cover but the Bulldogs' cupboard is rather bare. They are last in NSW Cup and I think they're second-last in 20s.

Tony Williams is the one on the way out. Very much a Dave-Taylor-type: excellent or asleep

CRONULLA SHARKS

Mitch Brown, Jayson Bukuya, Kurt Capewell, Josh Cleeland, Michael Ennis, David Fifita, Jacob Gagan, Paul Gallen, Chris Heighington, Luke Lewis, Junior Roqica, Sam Tagataese

My guess:

- older guys are all in good form. I'd give Gallen, Lewis, Ennis another year and maybe quietly tap Heighington on the shoulder.

- the Sharks' improving financial position and their performance this year would make it easy to replace Bukuya, Tagataese, David Fifita and Roqica. These all qualify for Pacific passports so could be attractive to SL teams.

- Gagan was a junior star wing/centre, who's now 23 and has only played 7 first grade games. In NRL business, he's expendable.

- Mitch Brown is only 28 and can cover wing, centre and FB. Despite seeming to be the "backup" at every club he played at, he's played 130 first grade games so he clearly knows what he's doing out on the paddock.

GOLD COAST TITANS

Lachlan Burr, Nathan Friend, David Hala, David Mead, Daniel Mortimer, Kierran Moseley, Nathaniel Peteru, Leivaha Pulu, Matt Robinson, Ryan Simpkins, Matt Srama

- Nathan Friend will retire

- Titans will keep Mead, Pulu and probably Mortimer as spare 9. The arrival of Peats makes Srama and Moseley already redundant. Kane Elgey's return next year and the development of Ash Taylor makes Mortimer redundant too but, because he's a 6,7,9, he's slightly more useful than Moseley and Srama.

- Burr, Hala, Peteru and Robinson are all grafter/backup types but couldn't command any serious money on the open market.

MANLY SEA EAGLES

Luke Burgess, Fabian Goodall, Nathan Green, Jayden Hodges, Isaac John, Liam Knight, Brenton Lawrence, Blake Leary, Feleti Mateo, Tony Satini, Josh Starling, Tom Symonds, Jorge Taufua, Brayden Wiliame

I'd keep Green, Liam Knight, Lawrence, Leary, Symonds and maybe Wiliame or Taufua but probably not both.

The rest are NSW Cup players. With Api Koroisau and Pita Godinet they don't need Jayden Hodges and Isaac John. Players like Lewis Brown and Jamie Buhrer give them a lot of flexibility. I think they're better off dropping all their fringe players and raiding some other clubs' 20s - the Sea Beagles own 20s are coming last.

Nikorima linked with Melbourne Storm as rumours Cronk (32 years old) and/or Green (29 years old) will be off and Smith 33 is not getting any younger. Its one area Storm are a bit light on is up and coming halfbacks and Hookers. http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/nrl/melbourne-storm-set-to-poach-rising-broncos-star-kodi-nikorima/news-story/ae74dbe4c123e5d093a18129371389b1

If Marwan could snare

Cooper Cronk

Matt Gillette

Luke Lewis

Paul Gallen

Kenny Bromich

Corey Norman

Salford would be nailed on for the Finals....

Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.

MELBOURNE STORM

Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Cheyse Blair, Kenny Bromwich, Cooper Cronk, Blake Green, Ben Hampton, Richard Kennar, Mark Nicholls, Young Tonumaipea, Matt White

Obviously the only holdup with Cronk is the fine print. The other priorities would be Asofa-Solomona, Kenny Bromwich and either Green or Hampton but possibly not both. (See the above post about Kodi Nikorima)

Blair, Kennar, Tonumaipea and White are all expendable but worth another year.

If I was running the Storm I'd be tempted to keep all the expendables on 1-2 year deals. When Smith or Cronk pull the plug they will free up a lot of cash to go shopping and the Storm are sitting 2nd with their current roster so what's the hurry?

NEW ZEALAND WARRIORS

Charlie Gubb, Ben Henry, Mason Lino, Sione Lousi, Ken Maumalo, John Palavi, Jeff Robson, Henare Wells, Jonathan Wright

This club is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, buried under a quandary so I give up. Mason Lino is 22 and has still only played 7 NRL games. He was born in Samoa so I would say French or Japan RU look good. Also would be a good pickup for a SL club as he'll never own the 7 jumper in Auckland.

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS

Bryce Donovan, Krys Freeman, Josh King, James McManus, Robbie Rochow, Nathan Ross, Tariq Sims, Bradie Smith

McManus? Who knows if he'll ever play again. Being Scottish-born he may not count as an import in SL.

Keep: Nathan Ross, Josh King, maybe Tariq Sims

The others: I don't know who they are.

NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS

Javid Bowen, Ben Hannant, Sam Hoare, Jahrome Hughes, Patrick Kaufusi, Rory Kostjasyn, Kane Linnett, Ethan Lowe, Tautau Moga, Justin O’Neill, James Tamou

The first domino to sort out here is Tamou. If he leaves it frees up enough cash to re-sign Hannant as a short-term replacement, re-sign everyone else and keep checking the market.

Priorities: Javid Bowen, Ethan Lowe, probably O'Neill and Kaufusi

Less urgent: Kostjasyn, Linnett, Moga.

PARRAMATTA EELS

Mitch Cornish, Isaac De Gois, Bureta Faraimo, Michael Gordon, James Hasson, Luke Kelly, Cameron King, Kieren Moss, Cody Nelson, Corey Norman, Rory O’Brien, Kelepi Tanginoa, Vai Toutai, Joseph Ualesi, Danny Wicks

This club should be OK with the cap next year. Despite the suggested $500K of planned TPAs that will have to come under the 2017 cap, there aren't many essential names on that list.

Obvious priority is Corey Norman who supposedly wants a $200K pay rise. A lot will depend on whether he stays. If he goes there aren't any obvious $500K replacements out there so, if nothing else, it will solve all their cap problems and they could keep everyone else. Their 20s aren't very strong and their NSW Cup team is already made up of players who couldn't nail down a NRL spot.

I can see the 2 Brits on that list (Burgess & Eden) coming back to SL next year.

Burgess I reckon will end up back at Leeds (should go well in the Championship   ) and Eden at either Cas or Salford.

There's a few other guys off contract who may not get resigned who I think would go well in SL (Gubb & Bukuya look made for SL). But sadly there's a lot of dead wood who will probably end up coming over here who will decidedly average

St.Helens - The Home of record breaking Rugby Champions

PENRITH PANTHERS

Sitaleki Akauola, George Jennings, Robert Jennings, Josh Mansour, Suaia Matagi, Andy Saunders, James Segeyaro, Will Smith, Tupou Sopoaga, Peter Wallace

Peter Wallace will probably get a 1-year deal. Segeyaro, Mansour and the Jennings bros might be next on the re-sign list.

Spoaga is headed to RU. Akauola, Matagi worht keeping as spare forwrds. Will Smith worth keeping as spare 1,6,7.

Andy Saunders? Dunno him.

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS

Tom Carr, Ben Creagh, Matthew Dufty, Dylan Farrell, Jake Marketo, Benji Marshall, Mitch Rein, Joel Thompson

- Ben Creagh possibly retiring and going into a management job at the club

- Benji was offered $300K, knocked it back and then the club pulled that offer. He won't be there next year

- Mitch Rein is a priority and probably Joel Thompson

- Carr and Dufty were stars in StGeo 20s and probably warrant another year

- Marketo is a good value grafter and Farrell is 50/50

Mason Lino was supposed to come play in France but he backflipped.  I think he does not want to go.

He'll have to go somewhere unless he wants to spend his life in reserve grade.

Keep Brown, Musgrove, Hunt & Clark all cheep squad players & sign Carter up long term he's a cracker. Keary won't be at Souths I've heard he has already signed with St George, Oldfield isn't NRL standard, Cody Walker would be a good pick up for a SL club as would Dave Tyrell who won't be retained by the Rabbitohs either.

SYDNEY ROOSTERS

Tyler Cornish, Mitchell Frei, Ian Henderson, Sam Moa, Abraham Papalii, Omar Slaimankhel, Eloni Vunakece, Vincent Leuluai, Joey Lussick

Henderson might retire. Moa should be good for another 2 years. Vunakece, Papalii, Frei, Leuluai and Lussick are probably all cheap enough to get another year or 2.

Why isn't Oldfield NRL standard?

Didn't see him this season yet.
