I remember this has been debated before in the past, but it seems Parliament is to debate if England should have its own national anthem:

Jerusalem front runner if it ever got to the stage of choosing...

Why would you have a national anthem named after a city in another country?

Jerusalem is the sound of a thousand public school boys playing soggy biscuit. I cringe when the England (and Wales) cricket team have it played.

If we have to have a song to play before an England event, we've arguably got the best back catalogue of popular music in the world to pick from - let the crowd pick en masse from a  juke box selection and blast out the tunes!

It's not a question of coming down to earth, Mr Duxbury. Some of us, Mr Duxbury, belong in the stars.

Land of Hope and Glory.

I'd much rather not

God who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet"

My vote really goes to Barwick Green

As the same subject comes up on here on a fairly regular basis, I'll just post this contender... again!

Parry's music is exactly right. The lyrics very much open to interpretation. Tempo has to be right though.

I'm Welsh and you'll never get an anthem as good as ours.

However, the theme from Camberwick Green is a pretty good start.

I'd go with Jerusalem.

I can't be bothered to do all the checking but wasn't the song written based on a William Blake poem of the same name ?

I've got some vague recollection that its based on Jesus supposedly coming to England and using the churches to create some sort of utopia (a heaven on earth) across Englands green & pleasent lands.

Might be totally wrong, i'm sure there's some scolars on here to tell us the true derivative of the song.

Even if its not Jerusalem I think its long overdue for us to get our own anthem. Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland are proud to have their own identities while England's is often lost and wrapped up as part of Great Britain.

My guess is you'll also get a far greater take up of people singing our own anthem at sporting events than you do the national anthem.

Reporter on BBC News concluded his report by mentioning that some have suggested that Bowie's Heroes could be an English National Anthem, signing off with "well, at least it will get us noticed at the Olympics" thereby completely missing the point and highlighting his own stupidity.

There are 6 million people in Yorkshire.

Yorkshire should have its own anthem, and not bother about what the rest of England wants.

Agree entirely. And its own borders and passports outside Schengen. Then we could keep 'em out!

The theme from The Archers. You don't need to bother with words then. Rumpti-tumpti-tumpti-tump rumpti-tumpti-tuuumpt-tump and so on. Easy for the furriners to learn as well.
