Wigan to sign Frenchman

That's disappointing for Catalans, good signing for Wigan though. I've been impressed by this lad when I've seen him on TV.

These 'Team x signs Frenchman' thread titles are good fun - I feel like I've inasvertently logged in to a post-Brexit Home Office immigration tracker.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

Not surprised, he's really impressed me this season and again another example that Dragons don't give Frenchmen enough game time.

We've seen it with Springer at Cas, Simon goes to Wakey to be be on their best performer in the past two-three years and now Antoni Maria who I also rated goes to Leigh. He didn't get much game time up until the middle part of this season and look how good he is. There's a culture problem down in Perpignan.

If we have to find replacements for Clubb, Mossop, Joel and O'Loughlin then there will have to be a few more Wigan sign threads. I like this but would prefer Wigan sign NRL's...

Apropos of nothing (won't be able to write that much longer) and not a dig at JB at all...

One thing that amuses me about brexit is the way in which the remainers don't see the hypocrisy and intolerance in their - we're broad minded liberals and not racist like those millions who exercised their Democratic right to win a vote...

Ha ha....how did this thread manage to get turned into a discussion about Brexit?

Anyway, he has the aggressive, robust style that Wigan like in their forwards. Bit naive to think that NRL players are automatically better, we've seen plenty so called world class NRL players not make an impact in SL.

I just read the newspaper. According to the reporters, Wigan also approached Escaré to replace Sam Tomkins who busted his ankle.

I'm not sure Navarrete had a pro deal. He was just supposed to be playing the reserve team and only got called to fill the void. It will make the next Wigan - Wakefield a bit saltier for Scott Moore : https://vine.co/v/5ZP7FHdxInd

Well, Wigan do like the aggressive lads who won't run away from the battlefront. Navarrete is one of them. And he's probably waaaaaay cheaper than NRL player. And he's not on the quota.

I wonder how Catalans will fill the void of now 12 players.

Be happy to see Escare at Wigan to replace Sam if he can't play again.

In one week Wigan has been linked to Escaré, Pelissier and Navarrete. For Navarrete, it seems like a done deal. Escaré would be crazy to turn down Wigan, if not for another top 4 club (has been linked to Castleford, who signed Eden, and Leeds) and Pelissier... well, we'll see where he ends up but he'd suit Wigan.

Thinking about it, with Manfredi, Burgess and Escaré in the back line, Wigan would be very scary. It's (very) quick everywhere.

Good luck with Escare!

Navarette has mainly played off the bench. Early on this year didn't have much impact but the last couple of times he's noticeably had a dig - probably because his agent was speaking to Wigan and others! Could be a good lad.

I've got mixed feelings with this one as i feel navarette will develop better as a player at Wigan compared to Catalans while it's sad and quite worrying to see how the dragons get rid of their French players with such ease.

I thought Navarette would be relied on next year to pick up the slack from Maria/Elima's departure. Crazy if Catalans didn't even offer him a deal, I guess they'll be relying a hell of a lot on Margalet and Perez who are unproven at this level.

Indeed but at least it gives 2 more French players the opportunity to play in super league.

Exactly!  I love hearing that a French lad has signed with an English team.  It gives them experience away from the friendly confines of Southern France and Catalans only has so many slots.  If France are to be a power they need to have plenty of players in England and Australia.

All true, but I still have growing worries about the situation at Catalans.

They'll be alright mate.  Wonderful attendances, kicking the hell out of the Union club.  And a great development program stacked with French lads.

Yeah I'm also happy about French players moving to England, just that Catalans seem to have lost all their depth, they will be struggling for numbers in the forwards especially if Taylor leaves. Better hope Belmas, Seguier, Dezaria, Khedimi and Da Costa are ready, it will be tough for them after a full season playing for St Esteve.

Just like the kiwis playing in the NRL and look at the NZ national side of today which if they can field their best 1-17 are the best RL team on the planet.

Navarrete has only played a few games for Catalans.

Prospects for Clubb seems risky to continue.

Mossop rumoured off to Leigh.

Friday night after the game we were told Sam T was to have a scan Saturday. They'll know better next week about his foot injury.

Waney likes pl0enty props in his squad and Romain is another.

I'm hoping the shambles of this season end will be the wake up call for Catalans to start valuing their French players. If they don't there are plenty of English clubs who will and thank the Rugby League Gods for that.

Navarette, Escare and Pelissier at Wigan would be incredible for French RL.

What worries me is that the shambles is not the wake-up call, but the latest symptoms of an ongoing wrong-headed policy that will take quite a while to remedy, even after they realise what the problem is.

Normally i would agree but this is the first time there's been such a mass exodus in such a short space of time. It's one thing for Pelissier and Escare to have the odd moan about unfair treatment as happened previously. It's quite another to see them (hopefully) get contracts at top English clubs and perform well. It shows up the Catalan managements poor judgement and sets a precedent that young french players arent bound to the club. Maybe I'm being optimistic but it could be quite revolutionary.

Eventually, yes, the penny will drop.

It may take 4 or 5 SL/NRL club scouts to be spotted, competing for the services of French talent, for the Dragons to start valuing their own players less lightly.

But it might still take a few more expensive imported flops for them to suss that, and that could be a lot of money down the drain and another season (or even more) of underachievement.

I always like seeing a French player signed to an English club for the reasons already stated by others, it inevitably means nore French players in Pro RL and breaks up thr Catalans monopoly on the National team..

BUT...

They are towing a fine line here letting so many players go at once.. have to wonder at the depth they will have next season even taking in to account the signings they will no doubt make. Still extremely unlikely but if Catalans were to be relegated it would be a monumental disaster for the game of Rugby League.
