Baseball

I'm doing some work and have the baseball on in the background.  Six innings done and no score.  About as much entertainment as watching weeds grow.  Is baseball the rugby union of the US sports environment?

I understand from friends who have moved stateside that it's the stats that provide the interest.

You have to be a stato geek to really appreciate it - and millions of them do.

So, that's the nuances covered.  I guess the subtlety is let down by how unsubtle some of those chins and jawlines are.  Typical Americans, just don't get subtlety.

Judging baseball on a dreary game between the second teams of New York and Chicago would be like judging cricket on day four of a rain affected Championship game.

Not as dead as the entertainment in the game today!

T'is the game that's on though.  Blame the broadcasters!

I'm enjoying it. Sox are losing. Not a great one though.

I went to see Kansas City Royals when I was over at Fort Leavenworth last year. The game itself was diabolically boring (1-2) but the atmosphere inside the stadium was brilliant so we had a good time. I did however enjoy watching the Toronto Blue Jays on TV when north of the border as they did smash the ball all over the park last year.

When travelling to Costa Rica in the early 90's, we stopped over in Houston. Trying to think of something American to do a porter at our hotel suggested going to watch the Houston Astros play the Cincinnati Reds. He sorted us cheap tickets "up in the gods" for $6 each. When we arrived at the Astrodome, some executive met us, gave us a free (brief) behind the scenes tour before showing us to our upgraded seats two rows behind the home dugout. When we asked why we were told "We want you English to enjoy your 1st ever baseball game!"

And we did! A brilliant close game in a brilliant atmosphere and the old bloke next to me explained everything that was happening. One of the best sporting experiences I've ever had!

Plus the surf in Costa Rica was epic! A great month!

College championship softball taking the place of MLB in the schedules. Some decent games so far - once you get used to the much reduced field dimensions.
