Game now played in every county

Recommended Posts

I see Rutland Rabbitohs are playing their first game tomorrow, it appears at Oakham RU

I think we can now say we have played the greatest game in every traditional English county now, although must admit I am struggling to find one for Westmoreland but assume there has been, with its proximity to Barrow and West Cumbria.

If it is, then a nice milestone even not a major one

Wow, that's proper Union territory, I'm pleasantly surprised to see that happen. Who they playing?

Thanks, guessing it's a friendly. There's quite a disparity between teams in that Midlands division.

Having gone to school at Stamford and then Oakham, it's great to see, particularly seeing as Oakham school is a feeder school for Leicester Tigers and very anti rugby. I'm guessing the game will be Oakham Union players trying it out in the off season but pleasing to see their more open minded to TGG

Having attended Oakham School myself for a couple of years, any tolerance of RL is a sign that the place is perhaps less chock-full of half-bright tosspots (staff and pupils) than it used to be.

Or staffordshire?

As I understand it the OP means a game has been played in every county rather than is currently being played. In the 1980's a bunch of Kells players got transferred from Haig pit when it closed down to Staffordshire and started their own team, don't know what it was called but can probably find out as a good mate of mine was one of them

100% League 0% Union

Just because I don't know doesn't mean I don't understand

Haha, it seems your experience of Oakham school was similar to mine! What years were you there out of interest?

using old counties ie pre 74 then Burntwood was in Staffs and Birmingham played at Walsall RU. Wolverhampton also ran for many years

Dorset had a team in Weymouth and also North Dorset playing out of Ivel

Barbarians near Yeovil but south of the county boundary

Herefordshire is harder but saw a match there, either last year or the one

before in the semi finals of the summer leagues. I think it was Telford v

Bridgend

Looks like Westmoreland may still be beating us

1985 - 1987. I have to admit that the girls were a fairly nice bunch, but the boys were like 300 trainee Jeffrey Archers. The spectrum ran from nasty-but-dim to borderline sociopathic.

Ok not a lot has changed then. I went to sixth form 2000-2002. To be fair the day pupils were not so bad but the boarders were in a different world but then it was all about mummy and daddy's money. Despite having a number of friends who are privately educated, the experience has probably put me off and dissuaded me from ever sending my children to private education.

I hope Oakham can maintain an RL presence and not just for Union players to keep fit in the off season

Still off-topic, but my other public school experience (prep school for a few years, before re-entering state education) was quite different when it came to both pupils and staff, so they're not all ratbags. Oakham was just a toxic mess of entitlement and ignorance.

There was actually a Staffordshire League in the 80s albeit only with four clubs. Biddulph, Newcastle-under-Lyne, Kidsgrove Crusaders and North Staffordshire Polytechnic. Biddulph at times played in various other leagues around the region.later on the best players joined together to form a club in Stoke that played a season in the Midlands and South West League and then a couple of seasons in the NWCL

Our first game was on Sunday against Sherwood Wolf Hunt, we won 54-32, not only a great result for the team's first match (after only 3 training sessions), but a fantastic performance from a team that included at least 10 people that had never played the game before.

The best bit of advice I had when starting Coventry Bears was from the great Lionel Hurst.

"Don't worry too much about results on the field. Teams will have good and lean years, the key is to have a hard working committee that is there ensuring there is a club to play for"

There aren't any clubs in Herefordshire or Dorset. Berkshire are getting one but don't know if they're playing yet

The Berks (Reading) played their first game Sat.
