Lightstream Trophy

In an effort to soften the blow of losing a Challenge Cup final at Wembley, the RFL sanctioned a new competition for 2016.  The Lightstream Trophy was contested by the 2015 losing finalists, the League Leaders from the Championship and League 1 in the 2015 season, and the team finishing bottom of Super League 2016.  Each team would visit the home ground of the losing finalist during the course of the 2016 season and play one game.

The competition attracted some criticism since the losing finalist would have the luxury of home advantage throughout the league based competition and would play three times as many games as any other team. Nevertheless the format was considered a challenging one and would enable all competing clubs to enjoy a unique contest never before seen in rugby league.

The teams for the inaugural running of the competition in 2016 were:

2015 Challenge Cup Runners Up: Hull Kingston Rovers

2015 Championship League Leaders:  Leigh Centurions

2015 Championship League 1 League Leaders:  Oldham RLFC

2016 Super League wooden spoon recipients: Huddersfield Giants

At the conclusion of the competition the final league placings were as follows:

Congratulations to Oldham who competed against three full-time teams, two of which were from Super League.  A great example of team spirit and determination bringing home the silverware.  Oldham fans also arrived in a taxi and sung louder than you.

What a fantastic result and the trophy is similar to the F.A. Cup. We'll have to make a special place for it in the trophy cabinet. ;)   ;)

For trophy cabinet read "pawnshop"

Only joking, well done Oldham.
