Super League circa 2036 - Guesstimates

Recommended Posts

Lots of things happening over the last 12-18 months so prime opportunity for some speculative debate. How will SL look in 20 years time? Will it contain 1, 2 or more French teams? A Canadian team? A presence in the capital again or very much the make up we have now? System 3x8 still going strong? Twelve, 14, 16 or 18 clubs?

My shot in the dark would be 2 French clubs  and almost certainly another series of format changes (that's just what RL does). SL being no bigger than 12 clubs - maybe even as low as 10 - and perhaps even a breakaway (or detachment) in some form from the RFL.

The Canadian and/or other similar proposals is just too difficult to predict how it would pan out. One thing is for sure, if Toronto are established in SL by 2036 then the competition as we know it will have been blown out of the water. Maybe even for the better in terms of finance? On the other hand, it is feasible we could have crash and burned by then.

English Rugby League will be thriving and we will be the World Champions. There will be 2 x 10 full time divisions although the cream of our players will be playing in the NRL for the Lancashire Hotpots, Yorkshire Puddings and London Pie n Mash. Hypersonic flight will be a commercial reality and flights to Sydney will take around about 3 hours

Super League One will consist of Wigan,Warrington,Leeds,Hull,Bradford,St Helens, Catalans, Toulouse,Toronto and the New York Metropolitans

Super League Two will consist of Widnes,Oldham,Huddersfield,Chevaliers Cathares, Red Star Belgrade, Castleford, Newcastle, Coventry,London Broncos and Manchester Rangers

The third tier will be a thriving competition with Hemel Stags acclaimed for their superb flowing play and expected to make the step up to SL2 any year now.

Rocked by a series of criminal scandals & falling crowds and tv contracts due to the massive appeal of Rugby League the 15 a side code will be struggling to stay relevant and most of the Premiership will be part time.

Best bet for me is an anglo-french competition not far off what it is now.

Our strength is our tradition of playing and watching in the north of England and the south of France.

We will probably have to concentrate on that

I hope we will at least have two French teams in SL and a strong Bradford back with a league of at least 14 again.

I have no doubt that the 3x8s will be long gone in favour of the top 6 or 8 play offs again and hopefully consigned promotion and relegation to the bin once and for all and have 14 strong clubs with the chance of election for lower league or expansion clubs every 2 or 4 years.

After the success of Toulouse and Toronto, and France working their way back up to the top table, rugby league expands with confidence.  Following the example of the English setup, the RFL and CRL decide that expansion in North America will primarily focus on smaller towns with little or no competition from the Big Four sports or football.

We end up with a true Northern Hemisphere Super League, made up of three conferences not necessarily of the same size.  These play off at the end of the season for the title.

A British top flight made up of (all examples): Leeds, Bradford, St Helens, Wigan, Widnes, Warrington, Newcastle, Hull FC, London, Sheffield, Salford, Castleford, Wakefield, Hull KR, Cumbria, and Coventry.  Relegation and promotion still apply in the British conference.

A Continental top flight made up of Catalans, Avignon, Cathars, Toulouse, Marseille, Carpentras-Orange, Villeneuve-Cahors, Albi, Barcelona, Girona, Andorra, Bordeaux, Lyon, PSG, Montpellier and Ajaccio.

A North American top flight made up of Toronto Wolfpack, Quebec City, Montreal, St Johns, Moncton, Portland (Maine), St Catharines-Niagara, Ottawa, Sherbrooke, and Kitchener.  Further expansion is planned.

The Challenge Cup is reinstated as a British-only competition, with the Lord Derby for France and associates and a new cup for North America.

There is talk of expansion, and even a new, second European conference, with RL now firmly entrenched in Serbia, rising in Hungary in Norway and on the verge of real success in the Czech Republic.

Meanwhile, in the NRL, the league has expanded to add Perth, Adelaide, Ipswich, Wellington, Christchurch, Port Moresby, Pacific (split between Fiji and Tonga), and a FFR XIII-NRL joint venture at Noumea in New Caledonia.  There is talk of a team in Jakarta.  With such an expanded competition but only one trophy to play for, the NRL introduces a cup competition.

Can but dream, eh?

Eddie and Stevo will be in their last ever 'last year', and the Sky production will be largely unchanged except they will finally have changed the slow-mo try music.

Wakefield will be just two planning stages away from being able to put the first spade in the ground for their new stadium.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

1996

Bradford Bulls
Castleford Tigers
Halifax Blue Sox
Leeds RLFC
London Broncos
Oldham Bears
Paris Saint-Germain
Sheffield Eagles
St Helens
Warrington Wolves
Wigan RLFC
Workington Town

2016
Castleford Tigers
Catalans Dragons
Huddersfield Giants
Hull F.C.
Hull Kingston Rovers
Leeds Rhinos
Salford Red Devils
St Helens RLFC
Wakefield Trinity Wildcats
Warrington Wolves
Widnes Vikings
Wigan Warriors

20 years has seen 4 of the original 12 remain with Cas having yo-yoed and the rest (with the exception of Catalans) gain promotion/elevation to the top division through P&R or mergers.

2036?
Leeds Rhinos
St Helens RLFC
Warrington Wolves
Wigan Warriors

I'd like to think

Catalan Dragons
Hull FC
will still be with us in 20 years time, but as for the other 6 places, you'd have to hope that at least 4 of them would come from "development" areas or dare I say mergers?.I'd go with

Toulouse
London
Bradford,
Hull KR
(one of) Wakefield/Castleford
Toronto (or if it doesn't work, a third French side)

If we can stretch to a 14 side comp, then Widnes and Huddersfield and if we can get to 16 with a Cumbrian side and London 2, then 2 conferences of 8, 21 regular season games followed by top 4 from each entering the top 8 comp with the top 2 from that playing the GF.

Bottom side from each conference play off with the loser meeting the best placed Championship side in a best of 2 H&A contest.

Mind you, this all depends on us being able to continue to increase the TV revenue and get more fans through the turnstyles as well as replacing the aging benefactors who will sadly no longer be with us in 2036.

Potentially 2 ten team conferences working on a similar basis as southern hemisphere super rugby.

Current clubs subsumed into franchises with these clubs still existing at a community/reserve level. The franchises encouraged as vehicles to grow the game in their area.

4 lancashire teams

4 Yorkshire

1 north east

1 london

1 wales

1 midlands

1 scotland

1 ireland

1 usa

1 canada

2/3 french

Rest from Serbia, italy, spain, netherlands/belgium?

Lee Radford will have been offered yet another 3 year extension but will no longer be the youngest coach in SL.

Forgive me for repeating a revised and expanded version of what I posted on another thread. I admitted that perhaps this was a dream for 2030, but maybe it is more realistic for 2036, when rugby league loving Lachlan Murdoch will be well established as the top honcho in News Ltd, News Corps etc. and his Fox Sports in the USA can telecast the North American Super League in its entirety. BBC will show one UK game live each weekend and Sky Sports in the UK, compered by veterans Brian Carney and Jon Wells, will increase its coverage to 5 live UK Super League games each weekend, with the best continental game and highlights of other continental games on delay, while French, Italian and Spanish companies will telecast 5 continental games per weekend, with a delayed telecast of the best UK game and other UK highlights. There will be frequent talk of the need for a club in Dublin and one in Edinburgh, but nothing will eventuate.

North American Super League.

Canada-Eastern US Conference

Toronto *

Montreal

Vancouver

Winnipeg

Boston *

New York *

Philadelphia *

Washington DC *

Atlanta *

Jacksonville *

Central-Western US Conference

Chicago

Cleveland

St Louis

Dallas

Houston

Phoenix/Salt Lake City

Denver

Seattle

San Francisco

Los Angeles

European Super League

Continental Conference.

Catalans **

Toulouse *

Paris *

Avignon *

Lyon *

Marseilles

Montpellier *
Lille/Nantes *

Roma

Barcelona

British Conference.

Leeds **

Bradford **

Hull **

Wigan **

Liverpool-St Helens **

Warrington **

London **

Coventry *

Newcastle *

Cardiff *

That would constitute a 40 team Trans-Atlantic Super League, divided into a 20 club North American Super League and a 20 club European Super League. The two Super League would play in their respective continents for the entire season, each divided into two conferences.

The winners of each conference would compete for their respective Super League titles, and the winner of each Super League would face off in a Northern Hemisphere Super Bowl, that alternated between Wembley and New York City.

We could then top it off with a World Club Championship between the winner of the South Pacific Rugby League and the Northern Hemisphere Superbowl --- televised globally and alternating between Sydney and either Wembley or New York (according to the contestants).

The South Pacific Rugby League will consist of 24 clubs:

North Queensland Cowboys **

Brisbane Broncos **

Brisbane Crushers

Ipswich-Toowoomba Jets *

Gold Coast Titans **

PNG Hunters **

Newcastle Knights **

Manly Sea Eagles **

Sydney Roosters **

South Sydney Rabbitohs **

St. George-Illawarra Dragons **

Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks **

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs **

Wests Tigers **

Parramatta Eels **

Penrith Panthers **

Canberra Raiders **

Melbourne Storm **

Adelaide Rams

Perth Reds

Auckland Warriors **

Wellington Orcas

Christchurch Thunder

Fiji Bati

** = An already existing full time professional club.

*  = An already existing semi-professional or amateur club

In 2036, a small but noisy subset of Rugby League fans will be announcing the impending doom of absolutely everything.

So, very much like 2026, 2016, 2006, 1996, 1986, 1976, 1966, 1956 etc.

Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted.

The GPS trackers in the ball and players boots still haven't stopped the cries

of "Forward" and "gerrumonside" from that woman at the front.

Despite being able to buy a pint in London for a £100.00 it's still met with "How much? " by the Yorkshire supporters.

The 2034 World Cup Final between England and the USA had a TV audience of 3 billion. The event took place at the new 200,000 all seater national stadium under cover at the Midlands sports centre. The empty seats were blamed on the fact that the HS3 Link took over 30 minutes to travel from Manchester to the stadium.

In 2036 there will be frequent complaints from TV viewers about the intellectual complexity of an aging Jon Wells' post game analysis, and a yearning for the "good old days" when the late Eddie Hemmings and Mike Stephenson (whose remains were recently returned from Palm Beach, near Sydney, and reburied with a special monument adjacent in Dewsbury) expressed everything in laymen's terms, with help from the long deceased and much loved Barry and Terry (whose preserved bodies lie in rest at the Rugby League Museum in the basement of the George apartments complex in Huddersfield).

there will be two leagues of 12 , the rest will have gone to the wall ,rugby league will only be played at amateur level in west cumbria ,there will be no scrums , 12 men on each side with a bench of 8 and unlimited substitutions due to the high injury levels ,we will have adopted the cricket system of having 2 appeals on decisions each half rather than overuse of the big screen , that is if we haven t moved to a game of 4 quarters .tries from kicks will be 3 points and conversions from them 1 point.the top 4 in super league will only enter the challenge cup at the quarter final stage .marwan koukash will be in overall control of the game , teams will still be being docked points rather than suffer automatic relegation for salary cap irregularities. skys coverage will extend its coverage to showing all games on a pay for view system ,refs will get even more stick , australia will have won every world cup ,and wigan will still get all the 50/50 decisions (sorry couldn t resist that ) .

Speaking from his tax haven duplex on the dark side of the moon, Sky Universal owner Duke Gledhill of Rooley Lane said that he considered that the new 5 year £125.60 TV deal would usher in a new era of progress for the game and he didn't think that moving kick off times to 2 a.m. on Wednesday mornings to tie in with the schedules of his Martian subsidiary would have an adverse effect on gates.
