Other nationalities in our amateur game.

Recommended Posts

Just talking about a fella who played a few games for my amateur side this season who was from Zimbabwe, got me thinking that there must be a whole load of overseas nationals playing a matter rugby league in the UK which I think is a fantastic thing. Anyone else got nations they'd like to add to the list.

I know the amateur team in Cardiff have (or formerly had) a lad from Latvia who I once played union with as well as a Pole.

I'm assuming we discount home nations?

I played with Aussies ( one was a mad aborigine ), Kiwis of course! PNG lads, just as mad as the Aborigine ).

Coached a Fijian, Kenyan, South African; and against Latvian, Lithuanian, Ukrainian and Poles.

It's amazing some of the migrants who love our game when they play it, and end up YouTubeing information to understand it better. Hopefully they will be missionaries if they go home?

The great thing is is that the majority of those nations have RL being played in them to varying extents. These guys will only add knowledge and enthusiasm if/when they go back home to help out.

I am not sure about this season but Kings Lynn Knights were probably over 50%

Eastern Europeans two years ago.

I think there were issues because of the hours and poor shift pattern these guys worked but they certainly did not take a backward step when playing. I think

they were primarily from one of the Baltic states and there were enough in the

squad to make a national 13

That rings a bell. Wasn't there a Kings Lynn poster on here who often spoke highly about this blokes?

I'm sure they were Lithuanian

1 Belgian ,Iliass Laachiri, who I believe will play at Keighley U23 next season. 1 German-Croat, Matej Beslic who will stay in the UK for another year studying, but think will be at Siddal, as he had a fallout with somebody we know very well. In fact think everybody has fallen out with him at some stage!! The other lad was Fionn O´Donnell from the Aberdeen area who came down to Halifax to study for a year like the others.

I think Global Rugby League Academy, run by former Siddal player Luke Garnett, will be looking after another 2 Scots from Aberdeen who will study/play Rugby League in Halifax, according to the Facebook site. https://www.facebook.com/globalrugbyleagueacademy/?fref=ts

I am sure that a a couple of the Dutch guys played at Essex Eels a few years back- Sure Yanto knows who they were. Max Schöngen from Germany played for Oxford Brookes a few years back. A couple of Czechs, Spanish and Serbs have played at Eastmoor Dragons I think in the recent past.

I once played in a team with an American, an Australian, two Jamaicans, an Italian, three Irishmen, two of whom were my brothers.

Don't tell me let me guess which were your brothers..... Was one a Jamaican and the other an Italian?

It is interesting that the original post mentions a Zimbabwean.  When I first watched RL in the 1960s, Wigan had Billy Boston on one wing, but a slightly built, jinky running Rhodesian on the other, Trevor Lake.  His semi-final try at Knowsley Road against Swinton, that sent Wigan to their cup final against Hunslet, was a joy to behold!
