a fine pair of young dunnocks down on the lower paddock chez VRG today

Underrated little birds, dunnocks - they look dull from a distance but much more striking close up.

Sex maniacs too, apparently. Good for them.

More goldfinches than you could shake a stick at today. Scores of 'em, sometimes in groups of around a dozen bods.

Saw a couple of yellowhammers and a linnet too, as well as the first group of housemartins I've noticed this year.

Why would anyone want to shake a stick at a goldfinch?

I don't know. There were too many of them for me to find out by trying it.

Most days, no matter where I am, there's a robin.

Generally waits for me to say I'm ok, then flies off.

It's fine.

I'm sure it's my mum keeping her eye on me.

When we scattered her ashes under the "umbrella tree" the only other witnes was a robin.

I know it seems silly, but a robin watching me is now my mum watching me.

a pleasing week on the feathered front, we've had a coal ###### in the garden, the pair of robins are getting tamer and come into the garden and get close when we're in there, and whilst out driving yesterday we saw a crested grebe pootling along the road in front of the car

Apparently, the White Horse in Hutton Cranswick was the place to be last night if you wanted to see one of the more famous ones performing.

Anyway...

I do a fair bit of driving around the East Yorks villages with work and have certainly seen an increase in Red Kites. Absolutely breathtaking creatures.

I've been putting a fair amount of stuff out in my somewhat urban front garden and have been pleasantly surprised by what's visited. The old Nyger seeds doing the stuff re goldfinches and countless wood pigeons, collared doves and smaller species visiting the table and hanging feeders.

I did leave the house a while back shortly after seeing a garden full of birds to notice how quiet it was. I stood for a moment looking round wondering if a cat needed a little brick based discouragement from wandering into my garden, only to be taken by surprise by a sparrowhawk taking off from cover under my holly tree.

That's been the biggest compliment to my efforts to encourage the local birdlife to visit.

The Pedals and Beer Pump Tour no less. Not averse to a bit of that mesen.

Spotted a pair of Red Kites at Hotham a few weeks back. They're a magnificent sight,

Been kept on site for w few weeks due to van issues (basically, the MD "borrowed" and fecked it...)

However, the local family of Muntjac deer have been around in the woodland next to the building, which is always nice to see.

I thought they were solitary, except when with young which roamed quite large areas. How many have you seen at once?

3.

Male, female, young. They were last year.

Seen adult pair just once this year, usually just one of them, either sex.

They obviously do roam widely, not been seen this week yet, I believe, and can have months between sightings.

Ta.

I get them all the time in the garden, but only ever one adult at a time.

Took a rare opportunity to take middle son to Bempton Cliffs today. What a magnificent, stunning place.

I really urge anyone with even the vaguest interest in wildlife to pay a visit if you can - puffins, gannets, kittiwakes, razorbills, guillemots, you name it - you can almost reach out and touch them. You need to go at this time of year, mind.

Also went into Bridlington for an hour or so - even that place looked ok in the sunshine today. Went on the pirate ship cruise too, so we did. Yaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrr!

happy day :)
