The Tory Leadership Contest

Recommended Posts

It begins...

...and will end on 2nd Sept, much earlier than anticipated (paving the way for an October general Election, perhaps?)

(Will add a new poll once all the actual candididates are known, just a bit of fun for now).

Theresa May.  Not even the Tories could be so dense as to allow Boris to become our PM.  May has a bit of the night about her, in the same way as Michael Howard, but better someone like that in charge than someone like Boris who is a journalist politician and only cares what will get people to "buy" his brand.

Boris is the odds on favourite.  However, not sure that last few days will have done him much good.

May has a disadvantage of being a remainer (though a quiet one).

Bit of a poisoned chalice one would think?

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

If it was a public vote then it would be odds on for Boris. For some reason he is unbelievably popular, I just don't get it myself. It will all from who is put up as the AOBB candidate.

If Boris wins, I am emigrating to Scotland at some point when it becomes an independent nation. Prior to that, I'll probably to busy patrolling the streets of NI trying to prevent the Catholics and Protestants killing each other of the new UK-EU border crossings. ;)

Part of me would like to see Boris get the job, if only because he deserves to be left to clean up the mess he's created.

I don't think he's capable of cleaning up the mess though, so for the sake of us all, I hope he gets nowhere near it.

Theresa May would probably be the least worst option for the country right now.

I get the impression Boris knows he has messed up big time. I don't think he understands the problems, nor how to fix them, and he doesn't want the responsibility for doing so.

I note he is nowhere to be seen in today's Commons proceedings.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

Gove and Boris both absent.

I think he does understand the problems, and knows he's not up to the job of dealing with them.

I reckon what he was expecting was a narrow 'Remain' result and a weakened Cameron, with plenty of disappointed and angry Eurosceptic MPs looking to oust him in favour of Johnson/Gove/IDS.

I never thought I'd see the day where Theresa May appeared to be the safe, sane option for anything.

Same.

I've stopped weeping for the future and am now howling for the present.

I've heard more than one person suggest that May can't be PM as she was a remainer.

I thought the system was that the MP's chose the final two candidates to be put to the wider membership.  If this is so perhaps Boris will be excluded. How popular is he with his fellow Tory MP's?

I don't want to see a unity leader. I want to see someone who will purge the party of Johnson, Gove, Smith,Fox,Patel etc. The problem is that the party members out there in the golf clubs and Women's Institutes love Boris.

The Tory party is a coalition, like all political parties in this country have to be. So a unity leader it will have to be, or the party will fall apart.

I sincerely hope those people eat their own heads.

When people started declaring for one side or another there was a real sense of disappointment in the Leave camp that May did not join because she is reputed to be a euro sceptic.  That she opted for the Remain camp and then proceeded to say nothing whatsoever I think puts her in a strong position.  I think she is level headed enough, strong enough, determined enough and detached enough to be the right person for this particular job.  Her appointment would also probably mean there would be no need for a quickie general election as she has served in a high profile job already in the present government and therefore could be considered to have a mandate to take the country forward.

And I think the last thing we need is a quickie general election.  The country needs stability now and focus.  Pity the Labour party chose now to hold their rebellion, pity Cameron was a bloody wuss, and a pity Sturgeon just can't resist being opportunistic.  All these things are feeding into the economic uncertainty and making it worse.

We had stability.

We had focus.

We had record levels of employment.

We had low unemployment, second only to Germany.

We had a steadily rising stock market.

We had the respect of the IMF etc.

Now, thanks to the Brexiters, thanks to Johnson, Gove, Smith, and their supporters all that is in jeopardy... and in fact we have lost quite a bit already, after only a few days.

These destroyers of all the good work of the past years must hang their heads in same. NO wonder Johnson and Gove didn't turn up in Parliament this afternoon. They were ashamed.

You've missed the number one culprit off your list: David Cameron. It all starts and ends with him.

That was all conditional on the Italians, Spanish, Portuguese and Greeks willingly accepting permanent austerity and crippling recession and us being lucky enough that fascists were only getting 49.7% of the vote in Austrian presidential elections and not 30,000 votes more. The EU is on the way out whether we like it or not so we may as well get ready a few years early for the new world and reorientate out economy towards Asia.
