PREVIEW: Newcastle Thunder v Doncaster

Dons News

Doncaster Rugby League head north to take on Newcastle Thunder at Kingston Park on Sunday (3pm) in round seven of Kingstone Press League 1.

The Dons are looking for a fourth successive win in the division and a victory for Gary Thornton’s side could see Doncaster return to the top of the league, a position briefly held following last week’s full time whistle in the win against Hunslet Hawks.

Ryan Wright who made his second Dons debut in last Sunday’s clash is likely to retain his place in the side, whilst David Foggin-Johnston could make a return from injury.

Dons top try scorer Jason Tali who has been in fine form, with five tries in three games will also come up against his former side, last season the Papua New Guinea centre scored 14 tries in 14 games during his time on Tyneside.

Doncaster have a great record against Newcastle (formerly Gateshead) Thunder over recent years, having won the last seven meetings and Thornton will be looking to extend that run on Sunday.

Rugby union side Newcastle Falcons purchased Thunder in 2014 and moved the club from Gateshead International Stadium to Kingston Park, where they now play on an artificial 4G surface, which will be a test for the Dons.

Newcastle currently sit eighth in League 1 with two wins to their name this season, losing twice and drawing once from their opening five games.

Thunder are without a league win on home soil so far this season, suffering defeats to North Wales Crusaders and Hunslet Hawks at Kingston Park.

Last time out they recorded a narrow 21-18 away victory at the University of Gloucestershire All Golds thanks to Ben Hardcastle’s late penalty.

Peter Fox and Josh Kittrick, who joined Thunder from the Dons over the close season could line-up for Newcastle on Sunday.

Last time the two sides met, Doncaster recorded an emphatic 78-6 victory at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Our last meeting on Tyneside saw us defeat the Thunder 40-22 at Gateshead International Stadium.

Supporters travelling to Newcastle should be aware that part of the A1 will be shut on Sunday due to roadworks.
