The Human Rights Act

Recommended Posts

Repeal of this act was in the Tory manifesto.  Another of Dave's hostages to fortune, hoping for another coalition with the Lib/Dems in order to scrap this promise and blame it on them.  When this didn't happen he still skirted around the promise and put off implementation.  But now Theresa is determined to push it through.  Thus proving what she said years ago, the Tory party really is the "nasty party."

What's it going to be replaced with and how will it be different?

No one knows yet.  It was a priority manifesto promise.  Then something that was to have proposals done in the first 100 days of the new government.  Then moved to a longer timetable.  Then dropped off the legislation timetable.

The guy looking into it lost his job at the last reshuffle.

It's still a manifesto promise but doesn't appear to be any closer to be happening.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

They wanted it replaced with a British bill of rights. It will pretty much be the same as the HRA but will probably give the government more freedom to deal with foreign terrorists and be easier to deport them. Cases like Abu Hamza would be dealt with far quicker

Was in the deep long grass.  Truss was asked a question about it and she reiterated the manifesto pledge.  There was a panic that she had announced something.  It appears to be a false alarm, at this moment.  I think they will come back to it, as its a big bug bear for their supporters (and the mail!).

The Canary really is rubbish.

There was no press release and no new announcement.  Truss answered a question, at the end of an interview on prisons, with the stock manifesto answer.  There is no new policy.

Will the British Bill of Rights be announced in the future?  Probably.... small details like the Good Friday agreement to sort out first.

Mmm.

And...... the ECHR is still in place of course, from which the Tories are unlikely to resile if they repeal the HRA, unless they have a desire for a whole heap of trouble and expense.

  • 2 weeks later...

Truss committed again to have a British Bill of Rights to replace the HRA.  But she also committed to staying part of the ECHR.

Isn't the ECHR the bit that upsets the Mail?

That's the ECtHR & some of its decisions.

The ECHR is the convention.

The abbreviations cause confusion.
