Ryan Morgan Signs for Saints

Recommended Posts

The club has just sent an email out to fans confirming Melbourne (or should that be Eels given he's technical on loan) centre Ryan Morgan has signed a 3 year deal with Saints from 2017.

Fairly happy with this signing, I can't remember the last time Saints had 2 out & out centres at the club. Should certainly take the pressure off Percival as being the only 'go to' man in the 3/4's

None of the young centres at the club (Wellington, Spedding & Fleming) have shown they are yet capable at playing SL week in week out. Fleming was shown up badly on Friday night as was Spedding earlier in the year. Wellington is probably the most talented of the 3, but given his background (mostly union) he still has a lot of areas of his game that need work.

They're all still teenagers so being part of the 1st team squad learning from the likes of Percival & Morgan but playing reserves wont harm their development at all.

He's hardly a Jamie Lyon signing, the storm only signed him due to a bad run of injuries in their 3/4s.

Surely this is the problem for Saints in recent times.  Signing aussies we've never heard of or Brits like Owens is never going to get them back up at the top again.

Don't compare Morgan and Owens/Dawson.

Ryan Morgan, 90 NRL games for Parramatta and Melbourne, 31 tries scored. He's a fringe NRL player, sure but he's good at running the ball and does the job most of the time. That is, in NRL. Not much doubt about how he'll fire in SL.

But for Saints to sign "fringe" NRL or Super League it's a far cry from cherry picking star players from the two sources as was once the norm.

Decent player this year at Melbourne. Labelled as a surprise signing for Melbourne as he hardly did much at Parra. However under Bellamy- as s often the case he has done well. Certainly has done a very good job and better than the more highly rated Chambers this season. Has potential and could be one of those no name signings that does well- or he could be just another no name Aussie who does little. Much will depend on Cunningham and his coaching team as to how he goes.

More often than not its the 'big names' that are total flops, either because when they come to SL they're well past their best or they come here thinking SL will be easy and then get hammered every week (Willie Tonga springs to mind here). Saints have had some test / origin players in recent times (Hohia & Perry) both of which were on big bucks but were complete failures and Saints are certainly not the only club to have fallen for the 'big name, big reputation' trick.

But then you have players who came over here as complete unknowns, considered as NRL plodders who have really taken to SL and have become stand out players, the likes of Denny Solomona, Joel Moon and Grant Millington.

There's always a risk when you sign overseas players that they wont settle into SL, but often you find that its the 'unknown' players to tend to perform better. Maybe its because they're here to prove the doubters wrong, or maybe SL just better suits their style of play, who knows.

I couldn't disagree more with that last comment mate, playing NRL does not guarantee any success at all in SL, there are a million examples of that.

As for Morgan, I have known him since he was young and actually don't rate him at all. Bang average but that is just my opinion.

If Mike Rush is still recruiting for Saints then they are trusting the wrong person.

I think we have a real shortage of top class centres in sl these days. It is one of the most exciting positions on the field, there is nothing better than seeing a classy centre draw in the defence and put their winger away.

Brent Grose was always one of my favourites at Wire.

Isn't Peyroux an NRL centre with similar "pedigree"?

Not much sign of quaking in our boots over the hill. Meanwhile our prodigal ginger scores the winning try for Souths.

Err No !

Peyroux was always a utility player who can play centre & 2nd row and he'd only ever played  a handful of 1st team games in the NRL where as Morgan has nearly 100

ryan morgan...bloody hell...

well i suppose it's cheaper than running a proper reserve grade to blood our kids

Saints are one of the few teams who can field an entire 3/4's of home grown lads (Lomax, Makinson, Percival, Swift, then one of Spedding, Wellington and Fleming). Unfortunately the 3 young lads who've been given some game time this year just aren't ready to be playing 1st team rugby week in week out.

Personally I'm not convinced by Fleming and I have doubts he'll make it, but the other 2, Wellington in particular have shown a lot of promise but there's areas of their game that still need a lot of work

A lot of people said the Lyon signing was mediocrity.

Give over.

Can't recall anyone calling Lyon mediocre,he was a world class centre before he signed for Saints,Morgan is no where near that standard.

Ok, maybe I worded that wrongly, but he was far from the player he became at Saints and at later at Manly.

Some questioned whether it was a good signing due to his mental state at the time. Remember, Lyon jacked the NRL, with time left on his contract, to play Country. It didn't work out and he ended up coming to Saints, maybe 6 months later. Also, prior to Saints, he wasn't the goal kicker for Parra. Only when he arrived here did he undertake that role and the rest is history.

Lyon when he signed for Saints was probably in the top 6 or 7 centres knocking about.

Morgan wouldn't get in the top 30 centres in the world if a list was put together.

I have my doubts over Fleming too. Spedding didn't impress me either but that was the only game I saw of him so can't judge. I noticed you'd also kept on Bailey from Telford. How's he coming on - do you think he'll make it?
