Storm v Sharks

Recommended Posts

Go for the win, though to be honest not too bothered about the Minor Premiership as long as we can get to the Grand Final. Recently the Minor Premiers have rarely made the Grand Final and seems to be a curse! No easy games, no matter who you play. Storm need to sort the attack out and Chambers needs to frame himself. He has been poor, since returning from injury. Forwards need to step up a gear against Cronulla. Hopefully lessons have been learned from the Broncos game. And hopefully Mr "Inconsistant" Klein is not Reffing.Refs make mistakes and I accept that. But the lack of consistancy, over 80 minutes and the lack of common sense, is what annoys me most. It has been a problem with the Match Officials team in the NRL for a long time and has cost teams games in the playoffs.

The referees have in no way cost teams games in the playoffs anywhere near as much as the players lost the games themselves!

Your negative obsession with the match officials is not healthy LRL.

I think with the home ground and the experience, your boys will go in as favourites. I think that is also the way the Sharks like it. They seem to be better when there is less expectation on them to win. Unfortunately with history not looking favourably, if the sharks do get to the big dance, I think that pressure will be too much for them.

Next weekend... Sharks by 4. Cant wait.

Sharks go into the game with a good win under their belts.

While they may not be favourites to win they certainly aren't underdogs.

The game should attract another good crowd.

Look well if it's a draw!

Both teams have the players to win the game.

It'll be who performs on the day.

Go Storm!

Refs can influence a game.

I don't usually go after them as they have a tough job to do, especially as stacks of players will try to get away with conning them.

If I was to rate refs, pushed like, then Klein would be one of my least favourites, as I do reckon he is inconsistent.

Storm wouldn't be happy to have him as ref from here on in in key games because of Storm's history with him.

Still whoever it is the Storm Sharks game should be a cracker.

The other key games for me are the ones involving Titans and according to that result possibly the Tigers.

My negative obsession is based on a number of poor decisions across games that have affected the game and result. The decisions from both match officials on the field and video Refs/Bunkers is often a lottery. I do not have much faith in them especially when you look at somebody like Ashley Klein. And its not just me that doesnt have much faith in them when you look at the comments from players, coaches and officials from clubs. The NRL have a directive, that means you cant question match officials performances, without getting a big fine. That for me is wrong and often Tony Archer does nothing to look at the problems in the game with match officials. Thats not healthy and no wonder allegations of match fixing are being looked at by Police. Heres a couple of massive errors which affected the results of games.

Beau Ryan’s seventh tackle try. Sharks v Cowboys (2013)

The Cowboys were left livid for what the NRL called “human error” as the Sharks’ Beau Ryan crossed over on the seventh tackle in their 2013 qualifying final. It proved a crucial mistake as the Sharks went on to win 20-18 leaving a sour taste in the mouths of North Queensland players and fans. All six officials were stood down following a horror mishap.

Matt Gillett wrongly sin-binned for offside. Broncos v Dragons (2014)

Referee Ben Cummins decided to send Matt Gillett for 10 in the bin after being ruled to deliberately shut down play while he was offside. A fair decsion – if Gillett had actually been offside. Benji Marshall took a quick tap from a penalty before bolting downfield, only to be stopped by Gillett 40 meters away from where the penalty had been given.

Dean Whare awarded controversial try by video ref. Panthers v Knights (2013)

Winger Dean Whare was awarded a try despite having his hand over the sideline in the Panthers’ 32-14 loss to Newcastle back in 2013. The decision didn’t really impact the end result but everyone was seemingly left mind-boggled by the video ref’s decision not to overrule the on-field decision.

Michael Oldfield handed benefit of-the-doubt by video ref. Sea Eagles v Cowboys (2012)

The Cowboys were again the recipients of a refereeing blunder when the video ref decided to award Michael Oldfield a try after Keiran Foran was ruled to have not touched the ball. Replays suggest the ball was clearly pushed forward by Foran, who, after initially denying he touched the ball, later admitted to helping it forward. The NRL later put out a statement declaring the try should have been disallowed as Manly went on to eliminate the Cowboys with a 22-12 win.

Storm snatch victory after the siren. Storm v Dragons (2014)

Dragons coach Steve Price was left fuming when Melbourne were allowed to play the ball after the siren, resulting in a match-winning try that shouldn’t have stood. Replays show that Storm winger Young Tonumaipea had not placed his foot on the ball before the siren sounded, in fact the tackle hadn’t been completed when time expired. Play was allowed to go on and the home-side escaped with a 28-24 win as a result.

The Storm have played other top 8 teams 10 times. They've won 6 but 2 were over the Titans and one was a 1-pointer over the Cows.

They've played top 4 teams 4 times and beat the Cows both times but lost to the Fish and the Raiders.

Lizard, I hear you mate. Referee decisions of course affect a game. Both correct and incorrect ones. That is indisputable. However, the players hold far more control than the referees in influencing a result.

In every example you share above, tell me, did players miss crucial tackles at any stage to let in a try. Yes. Did any player drop the ball resulting in a turnover in possession. Yes.

Your aim for perfection from a referee is impossible, just as it is to expect a flawless performance from any player on the pitch.

No matter how poor you think a referee performs in a game at this level, the players have far more influence over the result than even a handful of poor decisions.

Refs make mistakes same as players and dont have a problem if Refs or match officials make a mistake or two. Who is perfect? Players do cost sides games on the decisions and mistakes they make. But in a few cases so do Match Officials as well and its often down to being inconsistent rather than the mistake itself. But all I expect from match officials and the Bunker is to be consistant and fair in the decisions made. And for me I dont see that. Ashley Klein, is a poor referee. Its not the mistakes he makes, but his lack of consistancy and understanding in a game over 80 minutes. Its why he has been dropped for games in the past. The Bunker have the technology and time to make the correct decisions. Yet how many times are we wondering why they have made a decision when its so clear that decisions is wrong. I get the feeling many people are annoyed with the lack of consistancy in the match officials rather than the mistakes themselves. I am not sure having 2 Refs helps as you will often see one Ref penalize a side for something whilst the other will choose to ignore it.

It's game day! Minor Premiership is here to play for. The prize... Two "home" finals and a mouthwatering $100k. Don't spend it all on lollies boys and girls!

I am hoping for an epic encounter. Obviously hoping for a Sharks win and minus that, I want to see them improve on last week's performance. Storm I think in most people's eyes are favourites and if I had to put my possessions on a winner, it would probably be them too.

Storm defence has been a little patchy recently. I am going to throw Fifita into the equation for tonight's game. His performances of late have been OK with great metres but they haven't been game changing.

If the Sharks have done their homework, the highballs will all be going to the Sharks left winger Feki who is very susceptible to spilling the pill.

Good luck to the Storm... Ummm actually no luck wishes at all. Go tear into them Sharks!

Melbourne are $100K richer having claimed the 2016 minor-premiership with a 26-6 shellacking of the Sharks at AAMI Park.

But it’s Cronulla counting the cost of a horror night that leaves them sweating injuries and a possible suspension to Michael Ennis for an ugly shoulder charge.

Ennis could well be in hot water for levelling Blake Green early in the contest with a dubious hit, while Chris Heighington didn’t return after copping a heavy concussion before halftime.

Bench forward Joseph Paulo was also forced from the field with a serious knee injury as Cheyse Blair bagged a double the Storm rattled up three second half tries to prevail comfortably.
