  1. It’s impressive… but we’ve all probably forgotten any other equally or more spectacular tries over the last 20 years.
  2. Thanks for all the work you do to create, and maintain, this wonderful online rugby league community. I really appreciate what you guys do.
  3. An amusing thing to come out from the matter is that Leniu had never heard of one of the most high profile AFL players ever, Adam Goodes, who played in Sydney. Manly player, Haumole Olakau’atu, has also come out and said he’s also never heard of Adam Goodes.
  4. AFL are very good at getting the few fans they have in RL states to actually attend a game. For a very long time their stadium attendance figures have not been accompanied by similarly impressive TV viewing figure from the same state. The NRL can learn a lot from the AFL regarding how to get fans to attend in person.
  5. Thousands of regular Australian tourists go to PNG each year to walk PNG’s famous trails. The Kokoda Track alone gets 3000 to 5000 Australian tourists annually. If the right PNG government licensed package tour organisers are involved, then I’m convinced away fans could have a wonderful trip. They’d just have to stay within the “cocoon”.
  6. She’s showing her Western Australian roots. Western Australia makes Queensland look like a case study in racial harmony. In some parts of Australia many people can be very “casual” with their language and are remarkably naive regarding how that can be viewed in other countries.
  7. Some comments from the NRL https://amp.nine.com.au/article/595275bd-3359-4d96-95f2-50af12971c1c “We had a 61,000 average viewership on Fox Sports 1 for the first game, which was more than one third of the marquee college basketball clash between Xavier and Georgetown which preceded our games. That figure also compares to some US Major League Soccer games on Fox Sports 1," NRL boss Andrew Abdo said. "The second game attracted an average audience of 44,000. These are the two most watched NRL matches in the US on record. "The audience of the first game was three times higher than the most watched NRL games on Fox Sports in the past three seasons and over 280 per cent higher than the most recent Saturday games on Fox Sports 1.”
  8. The college basketball game that went into overtime and caused the NRL to be briefly bumped to FS2 rated 162,000 ( see Xavier v Georgetown https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2024/03/saturday-3-3-sports-ratings-lakers-nuggets-college-basketball-pga-liv-f1-nascar/ )
  9. I remember being in the US in the 80s and someone said “how was that Collingwood game?” when they heard my accent. They had watched it on TV. It’s been broadcast in the US for a long time.
  10. This article ( https://usafl.com/blogs/brian-barrish/20160524/examining-american-afl-tv-ratings ) has AFL getting 34,000 per game on Fox sports 1 a few years back and they’re still on Fox sports US with occasional Fox Sports 1 broadcasts ( https://www.afana.com/tvsched ). This article has MLS as 343,000 per game in 2022 which is similar to the NHL and in better time slots. https://fortune.com/2023/09/29/soccer-taking-over-america-apple-win-sports-streaming-wars-mls-deal-aden-ikram/amp/ In 2022, MLS regular season matches averaged 343,000 TV viewers, nearly the same as an NHL game. ……. Given this extra context I suspect the NRL had done more than enough to justify being solid filler content.
  11. Sam Kerr, who is a massive… MASSIVE … soccer sporting hero in the eyes of huge numbers of young Australian girls, and many sports fans in general, has been charged with racially motivated harassment of a police officer in the UK. Football Australia didn’t find out about it until they read it in the media as she’d kept it secret for a long time. She comes from a notorious family in Australia that has some dodgy history so I hope, for her sake, she isn’t following in her family’s footsteps. Her brother : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Kerr
  12. AFL is thinking about going to the US now .. https://www.sen.com.au/news/2024/03/04/afl-to-consider-teaming-up-with-cricket-to-take-aussie-rules-to-the-usa/
  13. Some locals having fun. At one point you can see a Toronto Wolfpack fan sitting behind them.
  14. One of the best things about V’landys is he makes rugby league fans genuinely feel like he’s helping the game reach its potential. He also totally ignores mindless criticism from other sports, class based attacks, snobbery etc. It feels like he ooozes “we’re rugby league, we’re amazing and we’ll proudly do what we do”
  15. It probably ends up cheaper than getting Tina Turner back in the day!
