A great way to celebrate two RL legends

Recommended Posts

The lives and careers of two of the sport's greatest heroes, Mick Sullivan and Roger Millward MBE are to be celebrated at a commemorative dinner hosted by Rugby League Cares Reunions in July.

The two men were both members of Rugby League's most exclusive club, the Hall of Fame, and sadly passed away earlier this year.

The dinner takes place on Tuesday July 12 at the Willerby Manor Hotel near Hull and will be attended by the families of Roger and Mick, as well as a host of special guests, including contemporaries of the two legends and current players.

Rare video footage of the two players in action will also be shown, as will photographs from throughout their remarkable careers.

The event will be presented by broadcasting legend Ray French MBE, who will invite dinner guests to share their memories of 'Roger and Sully' throughout what will be an evening to remember.

Rugby League Cares General Manager Chris Rostron said: "The game has suffered double heartbreak this year with the loss of Mick Sullivan and Roger Millward and we felt it was entirely right to celebrate the immense contribution they made to the sport.

"Their records speak for themselves, both at club level and internationally: Roger and Mick were among the best of the best and I am sure lots of people will want to join us to reflect on how good these all-time greats really were.

"We are delighted that the families of both Roger and Mick have accepted our invitation to join us as Rugby League Cares Reunions celebrates two sporting giants."

Tickets cost £40 per head, or £375 for a table of 10, and include three-course dinner and entertainment. The dress code is lounge suits.

All proceeds from the dinner will go towards Rugby League Cares Reunions which helps former players stay connected with the sport and provides assistance to players who are enduring hardship, illness and distress.

Mick Sullivan passed away in April after a long illness. He was 82.

The Dewsbury-born winger was a World Cup winner with Great Britain in 1954, at the age of 20, and again in 1960.  He shares the record for most Great Britain caps of 46 with fellow RL Hall of Fame inductee Garry Schofield.

‘Sully’ played for Huddersfield, Wigan - with whom he won the Challenge Cup in 1958 and 1959, St Helens and York.

Roger Millward, who died earlier this month at the age of 68, played for Castleford and Hull Kingston Rovers, who he also coached for 11 years.

In 406 appearances for Rovers, Roger scored a club-record 207 tries and kicked 607 goals. In his last appearance for Rovers, Roger defied the pain of a broken jaw to steer the Robin to a 10-5 victory over arch-rivals Hull FC in the 1980 Challenge Cup final at Wembley.

As a stand-off, he represented Great Britain on 29 occasions and played a key role in the second and third Test victories over Australia that saw the 1970 Lions secure the Ashes.
