OLDHAM Rugby League Club is delighted to confirm that a planning application will be submitted in the next couple of days regarding the development of Whitebank Stadium, including the provision of an artificial pitch, to replace the existing grass pitch, and other associated works.

Artificial turf (although I prefer grass )is a great tactical advantage even if it was not intentional our boys will be used to it how the ball bounces how it feels and then we are playing against a team who has only been on an artificial surface just to warm up before the match they won't be used to I think it may only make a slight difference but that once percent could be the difference between winning and losing and the all important two points

That's an awful lot of words and sideways speak.

Roughyeds have surrendered the lease? So who now is the leaseholder? It says our position is protected. But not that we are the leaseholder. So how is it protected?

It may be that Avro FC are now the leaseholder and CH has an agreement with them that we are allowed to play there if and when it is brought up to RFL standards.

But that could be just like the deal we have with Celtic. No guarantees.

So, Roughyeds have no home stadium.

Note it says - 'A planning application will be submitted'. Not - 'WE will submit a planning application'.

Also note that 'to move discussions forward' the lease has been surrendered. In other words the freeholder and council won't work with us. But they will work with Avro.

There is no mention of timescales. No mention of intended supporter facilities.

Even if everything works out perfectly it won't be ready for next season. Up to 13 weeks for the planning process before they can even start work.

This is bad news dressed up as good news.

Plain English.

1) We are no longer the leaseholder on Whitebank. And therefore technically homeless. The ONLY asset the club had....gone.

2) No improvements to player or supporter facilities are part of this planning application - or they would be mentioned.

3) The council and other funders won't work with us.

But the pitch will be plastic. Yay.

CH has an unrelenting obsession with Whitebank.

We don't have the lease. It's not up to snuff and won't be for years. It's a crime and vandalism magnet.

Let it go.

Those that still go seem very happy at Bower Fold and they seem to need the business - given the state of the Football Club and its support.

Over the years since we lost Watersheddings, the cry has been about getting the club on the rugby side of the town. Whitebank will never be a success due to the many reasons reported on these pages.

I have on numerous occasions mentioned the old Higginshaw Gas Works. It's a massive site with good links to motorways and it's on the rugby side of town.

The question for me is-are we still the Tennant's at whitebank and if so would having a new pitch later be a good idea considering the amount of vandalism we've suffered in the past by a few mindless yobs. How would they protect the new pitch etc?.But no real info from the club regarding this development.I assume that with the now improved media communication between the club and fans they will put us in the loop at a later stage(hopefully).

This is good news, progress is being made, that's what we all wanted, talking to the fans, that's what we all wanted. If a ground isn't ready in Oldham we all love bower fold, we are trying to sort that for another season, again that's what we all wanted. I don't buy this vandalism talk, if they are to start proper developments they will install the modern style fencing that is commonly used on new schools, clubs and stadiums around the country. Some of these are in the roughest parts of the country and don't have problems.

IF Whitebank is levelled, terraced covered and made very secure then the things in its favour are fans close to play (which I personally enjoy) and it may be made championship standard, and realistically this development is the only way the chairman can take things forward as its no secret that his club has struggled to make ends meet for some time, personally i  am also hoping that CH`s arrangements with mr Gorski have been honourable and fully serviced on time, as Bower Fold has ticked the boxes.

CH went on record some time back that Whitebank was the future of ORLFC, I hope it works out!

As can be seen from all the replies so far, this statement does not actually say anything meaningful and raises many questions.

I don't see why it had to be released before the end of the season as it has no relevance to either this year or next.

If the fans are to be engaged we need more details other then we have surrendered the lease and are having a plastic pitch.

Haha

Everyone moans that the club don't tell the fans anything, now they tell us something and they should not have said anything till they had more info. You couldn't make it up.

Yes Dave, it's ok for you, you've got one leg shorter than the other Haha.

Remember that film Flight of the Phoenix where a guy is told there's no use walking to safety as your stronger leg always takes a slightly bigger stride.  I've contemplated that fact way too much.

I'm going to reserve my proper judgement for when the club releases some more details regarding this development. Until then I don't think we can read too much into it.I think we'll have to watch this space. But I would still have reservations about security of the site after previous problems with vandalism. I assume in that case the site would be made as secure as you can make. We'll see what happens. I've got enough on my plate thinking about tomorrow.

Any progress is positive news and that's something we've all been waiting for, so can't see a problem. After all, we all want the club to be back in Oldham and if we are now going to get some action to take that forward that's great news. The detail will come out in good time but the opportunity is now clearly there, after a lot of hard work behind the scenes, so lets just hope all goes to plan and the future is in Oldham.

In the meantime, let's get behind the lads tomorrow - see you all there? ;)
