2016 NZRL National Premiership

New format this year starting on September 11th with 4 teams Akarana, Counties, Wellington & Canterbury. All games are televised and promotion relegation match between the bottom side and top side from regional leagues? which i think will be a double header with the Final.

I dont know if the format is an improvement. These sides are representative teams so the competition is played after local club competitions have finished ... but all games being televised is an improvement & they have even had had some advertising for the comp on pay TV channel that will be televising the games.

Kevin Locke is back playing for Northcote Tigers in the Auckland Fox Memorial Club Competition so may be able to play in NZRL Premiership for Akarana (Auckland) if selected. Ill post a link below for the Fox Memorial TV coverage, i would be interested to see what people in the UK think of the standard of the competition? Just to clarify Auckland Fox Memorial is competition from which the 2 Auckland based NZRL Premiership sides select there players from.

Regional club grand finals have been played over the last 2 weeks. These competitions are where the players in the NZRL Premiership are selected from to give people an idea of Rugby League in NZ.

Wellington Grand Final Whiti Te Ra defeated Te Aroha coverage from Maori news report. Whiti Te  Ra come from small town just outside Wellington region and entered team in Wellinton comp this year and won going through the season undefeated.

Auckland Fox Memorial Papakura (from Counties- Manukau region) defeated Point Chevalier (Akarana). Papakura has Reece Joyce from tv show NRL Rookie playing for them as well as quite a few players with NRL under 20's and NSW cup experience in both sides.

Canterbury Grand Final Linwood defeated Hornby. Hornby feature former NZ Warriors player Corey Lawrie & Canbera U20's player Tevin Arona, Linwood best know players is Canterbury Bulls captain and NZRL residents player Chris Bamford.

this years premiership features promotion/relegation one of the teams in the hunt for promotion are the South Island provincial champions from the deep south of the country Southland, who will play winners of central & northern zones and winner of that then gets a promotion match against lowest ranked NZRL Premiership region.

Good to see Canterbury Bulls promoting themselves... hopefully this year see a bit more support come back to NZ local representative footy.

Round 2: Akarana 30 beat Counties 24, Canterbury 34 beat Wellington 16.

2 very competitive games this week Akarana came from behind to beat counties,17 year old Akarana & NZ secondary Schools halfback Zae Wallace has really stood out over last 2 weeks as one to watch for the future awesome passing, running & kicking game, has organisational skills and kicks goals even goes ok on Defence considering his 63kg 5 foot something frame. Canterbury Bulls 2nd rower Phil Nati was player of Day & looks like he could handle playing professionally. Wellington side showed improvement on defense and where competitive but are now out of the ruining to make the final this year.

Round 3: Counties thrashed Wellington 82-12, Canterbury beat Akarana 38 - 26.

Canterbury needed to win by 19 points today to make the final, they recalled the best forward in the local game former Jr Kiwi & NZ residents player Chris "Bam Bam" Bamford who lead the charge with 2nd rower Phil Nati creating play out wide Canterbury lead 12-4 at halftime. Auckland side had former Kiwi and NRL player Tavita Latu off the bench who helped his side to the lead early in the 2nd half but with Bamford coming back in to the game later in 2nd half Canterbury came back to win but ran out of time to win by the 19 points needed.

The Wellington result reflects 20 years of gradual decline of the sport in the region, shrinking playing numbers & poor administration. A club from Manawatu region outside Wellington won 2016 Wellington Club Grand Final, 5/7 players selected for Wellington from that club didn't want to play for wellington. With 3 weeks off between club grand final & 1st game Wellington admin should have organised a warm up game to keep players match fit & build combinations. Akarana, Counties, Canterbury have players with NYC Under 20's, NSW & Qld cup, NZ Residents, Jr Kiwis, NRL and even an ex Kiwi Player... the Wellington side currently dosnt have anyone with those levels of experience.

Final next week Counties Vs  Akarana & promotion relegation game is the curtain raiser Wellington Vs Waikato. Waikato qualified for the game by beating Southland 52 - 6 at home down in Invercargil at the bottom of the South Island. Apparently the 2 sides had never met before, Southland did well to make the 2nd division final considering there are only 4 Rugby League clubs and 120 adult players registered in Southland.

Akarana are the 2016 Champions wining the Albert Baskerville Shield defeating Counties 32 - 12. The two Auckland sides both have large numbers of players with NRL under 20's, Nsw & Qld cup, Jr Kiwis, NZ Residents, Even ex Samoan & Kiwi international experience and are building a cross town rivalry both having been in the final last year. Waikato gained promotion defeating Wellington 38 - 14. This Wellington team would have to be one of the weakest to represent the province in history. Waikato played like they wanted promotion & will make the competition more competitive next year. NZ Residents side has been selected from the competition and will play an Invitational Maori side on 15 October. NZRL has done well with the new format of the competition, live coverage of all games, organizing a game for NZ Residents. All we need now is more spectators at games and a bit more media coverage but keep building and those things will come.

Only just seen this thread.  Very positive developments - the Wellington situation excepted - for NZRL.
